Fears raised over flood possibilities
Travellers have been warned over the potential dangers of flooding at two Californian cities.
After the terrible floods which hit New Orleans in the US last year, following the powerful Hurricane Katrina, experts have claimed that Sacramento and St Louis could be the next cities to suffer devastation because they both have rivers that are prone to flooding and levees are insufficient to protect those living in nearby areas.
As such, travellers are being advised to be careful when planning a trip to the cities and to make sure they keep abreast of the weather forecast, so as to not put themselves in danger of being caught in a major flood.
Residents and the thousands of tourists who visited New Orleans last summer were caught totally unprepared for the vast devastation caused when levees broke following the impact of Hurricane Katrina, but experts at the American Association for the Advancement of Science are looking to avoid that situation repeating itself.
By highlighting the dangers of un-safe levees, the scientists are hopeful that the problem can be looked at ahead of this year's hurricane season so that defence measures can be put in place before it is too late.
