When in San Francisco
It is not difficult to describe San Francisco most people already have images of the city in their minds. Hollywood lies just along the west coast from this city and it is no surprise that Tinsel Town has made the most of the unique features of San Francisco in a variety of blockbusters. Whether it be Steve McQueen riding around the steep slopes of the suburbs in Bullitt or Roger Moore grappling with Christopher Walken atop the Golden Gate Bridge in A View To A Kill, F'risco has had its fair share of air time. But seeing it on the big screen still cannot prepare visitors for the beauty of this city. Quite different from anything you might find in Europe, it is also a world away from its east coast rivals such as New York. While the city that never sleeps is full of hustle and bustle, those on the streets of San Francisco seem to enjoy life somewhat more. Many people warm to San Francisco because of its laid back atmosphere and its accepting philosophy. That's not to say life in this city is pedestrian, by any stretch of the imagination. There remains a vibrant nightlife in San Francisco that is boosted by, but does not necessarily revolve around, its world-famous gay and lesbian scene. It is also home to a world famous modern art gallery. San Francisco is built on extremely steep, winding hills, which lead down to the bay area and the Golden Gate Bridge, and the hills on which the city is built provide for some steep climbs and wonderful views. The city has a very strong character and it is little wonder that this laid-back, breezy city is often compared so favourably with Los Angeles and New York. That breeze coming in off the Pacific Ocean ensures that the city does not suffer the same oppressive, airless heat of some other areas to the west of the US, such as Los Angeles and Las Vegas. Instead, travellers can enjoy the cooling and revitalising wind when down on the quayside, giving them the energy to make the most of their trip. And for those who really want to experience the Pacific wind, a walk across the majestic Golden Gate Bridge should do the trick! It is quite a walk from one side to the other, but it is the stiff breeze blowing in from the Pacific which will really test the nerve! But there is no doubt that the walk will be worth it, as the view from the other side of the Bridge offers stunning views of the city, with its awe-inspiring skyscrapers and rolling hills. San Francisco has a large and ever-expanding China Town, which is certainly worth visiting by travellers, as there are many bargains which can be found, in amongt the eye-catching tourist items. This is a particularly busy part of the city, with locals and visitors alike descending on the area to pick up some wonderful treats from the East. For travellers who enjoy their shopping, there can be no better place than Union Square. Located near the theatre district, this region is filled with all manner of shops and department stores. Catering for the top end right down to bargain basement, Union Square is a favourite with a variety of shoppers, whether looking to splash out or hunting for a cheap bargain.
