Montevideo Nightlife
The meat eater will not go hungry in Montevideo. The city is justifiably famous for offering some of the largest, tastiest steaks around. For the best steaks head to the designated steak restaurants, known as parillas. Fish is also superb in the city and there are many fine restaurants to enjoy. Those in a hurry should treat themselves to a chivito, which is a huge meat sandwich served with great numbers of vegetables.
On the drinks side of things, visitors must try medio y medio, which is a blend of local white and sparkling wines. However, the most popular beverage by far is mate, which is produced from the yerba herb. Most visitors may require a spot of sugar with theirs but locals will have it without, in what is known as a mate amargo.
There are many fine parillas in the Mercado del Puerto and the area is known for serving the largest steaks in the city. They also offer some superb paella dishes.
The old town has a number of good cafes where tourists can enjoy lunch or an early evening meal without breaking the bank. These places will also be the saviour of the vegetarian, who can end up feeling somewhat sorry for himself in the larger restaurants.
The Pocitos district is the most popular part of town for local restaurant goers. Many of the establishments are a touch pricey but the food is superb. For the best in modern Uruguayan cooking try Cru, where steaks are given a variety of twists. Nearby, Montechristo is a wonderfully innovative establishment, both for its castle-like exterior and its tasty, unique dishes.
Those on the go may wish to get lunch from the outdoor market known as Feria de Tristan Narvajam, where there will be something for all tastes.
Visitors looking to enjoy a spot of nightlife will have to wait up for it. People start turning up for the bars from around 22:00, with nobody taking to a dance floor much before 00:00. The Bartholomew Mitre bar precinct is the swishest area for enjoying a drink or two of an evening.
Café Misterio on Costa Rica is a lively and popular place and a good venue in which to start the evening, while Mariachi on Gabriel Pereira is a fine bar and has a small disco attached. It also often has live music between Wednesday and Sunday.
Fun Fun in Mercado Central is the place to go and try your hand at a spot of tango dancing although visitors should be warned that they will be woefully outclassed.
Those looking for a more refined evening should head to Sodre on Avenue de Julio where classical music concerts take place from May to November.
