Luxembourg Nightlife
Local cooking combines the hearty, sizeable portions of Germany with a touch of French elegance, making for a wonderfully tasty and filling eating experience.
The national dish is judd mat gaardebounen, which is large amounts of smoked pork in a creamy sauce served with potato and broad beans. Indeed, varieties of pig are what Luxembourg does best in terms of food, with jellied suckling pig and smoked Ardennes ham omnipresent. Sauerkraut is also often on the menu. Fish, specifically pike, trout and crayfish are also hugely popular.
Wine lovers will be in paradise. Elbling and Rivaner are two of the most popular varieties, while pricier are Gewürztraminer and Pinot Gris. If it's good local beer you're after, try Gamorinus or Grand Cru.
Eating out in the city can be an expensive business, although those watching the bank balance have a few options to try.
Good local fare can be enjoyed at Maison des Brasseurs on Grande Rue, while La Fourchette à Droîte on Avenue Monterey has truffles to enjoy in the summer months.
On Place de la Gare you will find Ems, a nice French style eatery that specialises in mussels in a wine and garlic broth. Inexpensive but reservations are necessary on the weekend.
Those willing to pay a little more for some of the best seafood around should head to La Lorraine on Place d'Armes, where the roasted lobster is one of the specialities. All the fish is wonderfully fresh.
The old town is a fine place to start for those wishing to enjoy a quiet drink or two of an evening. The old Café des Artistes on Montée du Grund is wonderfully atmospheric and very friendly while Chiggeri on Rue du Nord is home to a fine selection of beers although it is not cheap. A sophisticated, international crowd descends on this place most evenings.
There is a decent gay scene in the city. Cafe du Nord on Avenue Emile Reuter and Café Big Moon on Rue Vauban are two of the top bars to try.
One of the leading clubs in town is Didjeridoo in Hollerich. Here, a young crowd sweats the night away to a mixture of house and techno.
The city has a fine range of cultural pursuits to enjoy of an evening as well. If there is not a music festival of some sort going on in the city, head to the Théâtre Municipal de la Ville de Luxembourg on a Thursday evening or the Conservatoire de Musique on a Friday for concerts by the Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg.
Those after a spot of theatre will find that the Théâtre Municipal de la Ville de Luxembourg also welcomes a number of productions in German and French.
