Zagreb Nightlife
There is plenty to enjoy for the restaurant goer in Zagreb. Meat eaters will love the emphasis on meaty options in the local eateries. Superb fresh fish from the Dalmatian coast can be enjoyed throughout the city and the pizzas are also excellent, with the Italian influence seen in the vast number of pizzerias that can be found throughout the town. Those looking to try a local dish must have a go at the cevapcici (garlic sausages), served with onions, capsicum paste and bread.
It is hard to go wrong with any pizza establishment in the city. Some of the best include Dvojka on Kaptol, the nearby Nocturno, which can be found between Tkalciceva and Cathedrale and Baschiera 2 on Savska.
Those looking for some authentic Croatian cooking at a decent price should try Restaurant Suhina on the old Samobor road in the Oresje part of town. It does a superb line in roasted meats and is well worth the trip from the centre of town.
At Cantinetta on Nikole Tesle you will find another good place for local fare and there will likely be a good number of locals gorging themselves when you arrive. Be sure to also try the local wine at this decently priced place.
Seafood lovers simply must try Jadera on Zeleni Trg in the Vrbik district. It is not cheap but is renowned for its fresh fish and Dalmatian style cooking. Booking in advance is recommended.
Beer drinkers should try Ozujsko beer while the more adventurous among you may want to plump for the plum brandy known as slivovica.
There are numerous bars to try and the Tkalciceva and Trg petra Preradovica districts will keep most people happy. The nightlife scene could not be described as raucous but the city centre is always busy of an evening with plenty to keep the visitor entertained.
Those looking for a cheap drink should try the Godot pub, where the service won't keep you waiting for long. Close to the student area in town, be prepared to rub shoulders with a young and sweaty crowd.
Gjuro II on Medvescak is the perfect club for the tourist as it's lively nearly every night of the week. It caters to all types, although those turning up on a Thursday should be prepared for plenty of Men at Work and Spandau Ballet.
The gay scene in the city is fairly low key. However, a good place to try is Global Club on Pavla Hatza, which has a wonderfully friendly atmosphere and plenty of room to drink, chat and dance.
Jazz clubs abound in the city. One of the best is the BP Club on Nikole Tesle, where live acts take to the stage every night of the week. It also attracts international stars on a regular basis.
The superb Croatian National Theatre can be found on Trg marsala Tita for those looking for a more high brow evening, with plays, ballet, opera all getting a look in.
