Belgrade Nightlife
Clubbers will find much to enjoy in Belgrade. Techno clubs can still be unearthed here, making those of us with a taste for 1990's nostalgia teary eyed. Some of the best clubs, catering to a variety of musical tastes, can be found below the Kalemegdan Citadel. One of the best is Underground on Pariska, which is loud, busy and frenetic. For a club with plenty of class but a little less noise try Libido on Skardarska, which is cosy and great fun.
There are plenty of good bars to enjoy as well. For sophistication, try Manhatten on Palmotiçeva or Idiot on Dalmatinska, or for a beer during the day, head to the Plato Café's terrace on Akademski Plato, where many of the city's beautiful creatures hang out.
The city is not great for live music venues, with much of the live music you will hear based in restaurants and cafes. However, the city puts on a large number of music festivals each year, which bring all the country's music fans out of the woodwork. The pick of the bunch is probably the Belgrade Jazz Festival, which was revived in 2005 following the end of the Milosovic era, after 15 years away. Jazz is hugely popular in the Balkans and you will find yourself among an extremely knowledgeable crowd.
Meat eaters will be in paradise in Belgrade. Grilled meats are a speciality, with most types of animal ending up on the ubiquitous skewers. For those looking for a meal on the go, try one of the many street stalls dotted around for a tasty kebab. Fish is also popular here, and very good, as is calamari. A tourist in Belgrade must at some point try the local sljivovica - it may be the only plum-based brandy you ever have.
Many of the city's best restaurants can be found in the Skandarlija part of town, which is very much the bohemian quarter. On Skardarska there are a number of top establishments to try, including Sesir Moj, Tri Sesira, and Ima Dana. Prices are reasonable at all and the food uniformly superb. Nearby can be found the Three Hats restaurant, which is famed for its traditional meals and its traditional live music.
Those with more international tastes and plenty of money to spare should head to Focaccia in the Hyatt Regency on Milentija Popovica, but only after booking ahead.
Vegetarians are not well catered for in Belgrade, although the Sunce restaurant in Skadarlija is widely regarded as the best around for a non-meat feast. Lunches are particularly well priced, just help yourself to whatever you fancy.
A final-night treat for the tourist is to eat on one of the city's restaurant boats that are moored down in New Belgrade. These are extremely popular with locals, which is always a good sign, and make for a wonderful evening's dining.
