Salzburg Nightlife
Austria is a meat eater's paradise and Salzburg is no different. A huge variety of sausages are normally found on the menu of local establishments, and Salzburger Nockerl, which are sweet dumplings, are very popular as well. When it comes to beverages, Austrian beer is the equal of its German counterpart, with a good number of locally made, often cloudy brews keeping the locals and visitors happy.
Those looking for some traditional cooking will be able to find it in some of the city's picturesque beer gardens. Places such as the Augustiner Bräu on Augustinergasse and the Stieglkeller on Festungsgasse will not only serve fantastic beer but will also do a number of hearty local dishes.
Diners looking for a step up in class can try Purzelbaum on Zugallistrasse and M32 on Mönchsberg, where the food is more continental and the prices correspondingly higher.
Fans of organic food should try Ährlich on Wolf-Dietrich-Strasse. Based in the Wolf-Dietrich Hotel, it is the country's first organic restaurant and serves a number of wonderfully cooked, and decently priced, dishes. It has been a big hit with the locals as well, which is a good sign.
For a unique eating experience, try Ikarus on Wilhelm-Spazierstrasse. This Michelin-starred restaurant is based in an airplane hanger, with a collection of classic airplanes still in residence. Pricey.
Those looking for some entertainment of an evening simply must find themselves a classical concert to attend at some point. Most will include a large proportion pieces by the city's favourite son, Mozart. Salzburg has a huge number of venues to choose from, including St Peter's church, the Festung Hohensalzburg and the Schloss Mirabell. It is advisable to book in advance but tickets can sometimes be purchased in person on the day. The city also puts on a justifiably famous classical music festival from late July until the end of August each year, with most of the events based in the Mönchsberg district of the Old Town.
If the popular beer gardens mentioned above sound a bit too laid back for you, there are a number of bars based around Rudolfskai for some livelier action. The Yoho is widely regarded as one of the wildest bars in town, although it might not stand up to New York standards, and the beer is cheap.
One of the most bohemian hangouts is Bazillus on Imbergstrasse. Despite its scruffy appearance, the place is a popular and friendly hostelry.
Salzburg is surprisingly big on nightclubs despite its quiet exterior and Jexx on Gstättengasse is always fun. This large establishment is popular with youngsters and tourists alike and is open every night of the week.
Finally, jazz fans have a couple of top places to enjoy. The Jazz It Bar Music Club on Elisabethstrasse also offers the occasional soul set, while Jazzclub Life Salzburg keeps it simple on Schallmooser Hauptstrasse.
