Sao Paulo Nightlife
Sao Paulo after dark can initially be a daunting experience but those who take the plunge and venture out will find a nightlife scene that has been compared to that of New York in terms of its diversity and atmosphere. There are a huge range of bars, clubs and live music venues to try and the city has a good arts scene as well.
The Vila Madalena is the city's main area for nightlife. It's about 15 minutes in the taxi from the centre of town but the trip is well worth making.
São Cristovão is one of the liveliest bars in the area, with a fine mixture of football memorabilia, samba tunes and eats if you want them. A live samba band plays on most Saturdays and visitors can bring something from their favourite football club to adorn the walls.
Canto Madalena is busy and has a good array of drinks and nibbles to try. Why not have a chopp, a type of pilsner, or one of many varieties of pinga, a liquor made from sugar cane.
Grazie a Dio! Offers live music every night of the week. Often this is of the interesting Brazilian pop variety but on Saturday nights it's samba rock, which is great stuff.
The Jardim Paulista area of town also is home to some top venues, although rather too many seem to have gone for the British pub look ? worth trying though if you simply must have a warm ale.
Across the way from Jardim Paulista you will find the upmarket Moema area, home to the Bourbon Street Music Club. This is the place to go to if you're after some top quality blues or jazz on any night of the week and is an oasis for jazz fans in a sea of samba establishments.
There a numerous nightclubs to try throughout the city but one of the best can be found in the main business district of Itaim Bibi. Azucar is the place and the music is very much of a Latin American nature ? get ready to wiggle those hips.
There are a number of vibrant gay areas in the city but one of the friendliest can be found on the Vieira da Carvalho, where there are a number of bars to try out. The city is also home to the world's largest gay pride event, regularly attracting over two million people each May.
If all this partying is getting too much, why not try something a little more sedate of an evening? At the Teatro Abril in Bela Vista you are sure to find a major musical production on, while over in the centre of town at the Theatro Municipal you can enjoy classical concerts and the occasional ballet production as well.
