Santiago De Chile Nightlife
Santiago's nightlife is exuberant and welcoming, with less of the pretentiousness often found in European cities. Places are generally busy from Thursday to Saturday, although those after a drink or two on a Monday night will not have far to look.
The city has conveniently arranged itself into three distinct zones to help the tourist who knows what he is after.
The Bellavista area of town contains a large number of friendly bars, cafes and restaurants. After a long day enjoying the sites and attractions of the city, Bellavista is the perfect area to relax with a glass of something local. From 11pm, many of the establishments will offer live music of varying standards and genres, with boleros and latin guitar music the most common variety. The gay scene is also based here and visitors will be pleased to learn that attitudes have improved considerably over the past few years. Bunker and Prince Palace are two of the top places to go.
The Providencia area is less laid back and snazzier than Bellavista, with a North American theme very much in evidence. The area's bars are extremely popular with young professionals, tourists and expats, who combine to make the area lively if not a particularly authentic sample of Santiago's nightlife.
Boomerang is one of the more upmarket establishments in the area. Expensive cocktails and loud music are the order of the day here and you'll have to look smart to get in.
The nearby Boston Pub is a good one for those who find themselves in Providencia and after something a little less on the sophisticated side. Live music can generally be enjoyed during midweek as well as on weekends.
If you were wondering where the city's thousands of students go at night, they'll be found in Nunoa. Nightlife in this part of town is very much of the underground and bohemian variety. The welcoming bars and cafes in the area's main square are generally bursting with students most nights of the week, making for a lively evening.
One of the wildest nights in Nunoa can be had at La Batuta. This dark bar and dance floor has a grungy atmosphere provided by the clientele and decor. Most evenings it's home to canned music although on Fridays many decent bands come to play. Leave the suit at home if coming here!
The nearby Club de Jazz is the city's top spot for blues and jazz fans. Many top South American artists have played here and its stage has seen sets by greats such as Louis Armstrong and Elvin Jones over the years.
Finally, for classical music, ballet and opera, the Teatro Municipal is the place to go. This majestic building is open for tours during the day and plays host to a constantly changing array of events at night.
