Pisa Nightlife
After a long day tramping around the Campo dei Miracoli, what better way to reflect on a fine day of sightseeing than to enjoy a few drinks among the locals?
While Pisa isn't famed for its nightlife, anywhere that has as lively a student community as Pisa does will not be short on watering holes and places to let your hair down and the city does not disappoint on this score.
To keep things cheap, head to the Lungarni district or the streets around Piazza Garibaldi, where many of the main student haunts can be found. Caffé dell?Ussero on Lungarno Pacinotti is one of the most popular and oldest student spots. It is always lively and has been a drinking establishment hole and meeting place for the city's students since 1794.
For a touch of class, try Almatea, which can be found on the Piazza Cairoli. Here you can sip cocktails and do your best to blend in with the glamorous locals, who view the place as a great bar in which to start a night on the town.
If you fancy letting your hair down but don't want to head to a full-blown nightclub, try Bulldog's Pub on Corso Principe Amedeo. Here, tourists and locals mix happily and after a few drinks will take to whatever dance floor they can find, resulting in a first class evening.
For a real disco, the 1080 club on Via del brennero is a must. It's new, funky, very loud and attracts Pisa's most devoted clubbers.
If live music is your thing, there are a number of bars that cater to a variety of tastes. Most genres can be found in the Borderline Club on Via Giuseppe Vernaccini. Here jazz nights will be followed by a heavy evening of rock the next, meaning it is important to ensure you know what's in store for you.
If you are after a night out with a little more refinement, you would be hard pressed to do better than to attend the concert sessions that take place each summer next to the leaning tower itself.
Based in the Campo dei Miracoli, the concert programmes are varied, although those of an operatic bent are the best served of all. Tuesday and Thursday evenings are when the majority of performances occur and it is advised to book well in advance, as the concerts are a big hit with visitors and locals alike.
Away from the summer months, the 900-seat Verdi theatre plays host to a variety of plays, opera, ballet and concerts and is worth visiting if only for its stunning architecture.
Finally, a word of warning for visitors arriving in the summer. Many locals looking for a night out head to Viareggio and a number of other places along the coast when the weather becomes warm, meaning many of the supposedly livelier places in Pisa can look a little bare in July and August.
