Helsinki Nightlife
Helsinki in summer is a unique experience, especially for those looking to enjoy night time pursuits. The term "night time" is in fact something of a misnomer during the summer months, as the Finnish capital enjoys around 20 hours of light a day. While this means that traditional daytime pastimes tend to infringe upon drinking hours, Helsinki does offer a unique experience of an evening, with a huge range of bars, clubs and other entertainments to have a go at despite its relatively small size for a capital city.
Those looking for some late night sophistication should try Kappeli. This popular spot is a café-cum-bar-cum-microbrewery in the midst of Helsinki's café district, Esplanade Park. The place has the duel delights of a pub cellar and an enchanting terrace, which looks out on to a stage that sees plenty of live music action in the summer.
The Lost and Found bar is another good all rounder. It started life as a gay bar but now all people from a variety of age groups descend on the place, which often puts on live music and the occasional theatrical event.
For a bar of a unique nature, catch the Pub Tram, which runs from the main train station to the Opera House and Kauppatori stops. Although beers are pricier than at most stationary establishments, it is great fun and a good way to pick up some night time flavour.
Those keen to let loose on the dance floor must try the Helsinki Club, which stays open until 04:00 every day of the week and attracts some top DJs on weekends, when the minimum age for entry rises from 18 to 22.
Helsinki does not attract many big names from the world of music but the quality of live acts is still of the highest order. Juttutupa, on Saastopankinranta, plays host to some great jazz and rock bands, with Wednesday the best night to go, when there is always a top-notch jazz combo on. The place also offers a couple of restaurants and a terrace, affording great views over the harbour.
Another popular evening activity for visitors is the Opera House, which is well worth visiting just for the majesty of its architecture. Opera, ballet and concerts take place here most days except Sunday from September to May.
If you have money to burn by the last night, why not try to fund your trip at the Grand Casino Helsinki? The casino is a popular spot for visitors and anyone from the age of 18 can have a go at the hundreds of slot machines and many gaming tables. Live music keeps everyone going and the mechanical horse racing machines allow those daunted by the craps and baccarat tables, or pining for Southend, a fun and inexpensive option.
