Cork Nightlife
Like most cities in Ireland, Cork is an exceptionally friendly place and it offers the most welcoming nightlife imaginable. But unlike Dublin, for instance, Cork has a bit of a 'town feel', which makes it all the more intimate and all the more engaging for those spending a couple of weeks or just a few days there. The great thing about a night out in Cork is that everything is close and within walking distance and so you'll never exhaust yourself wandering between the best restaurants, pubs and clubs. Getting the food out of the way first, there are impressive Italian, Mexican, Thai, Chinese, Indian and African restaurants scattered around the city and sinking a few stouts while enjoying the cosmopolitan feel of one of these establishments is usually a good bet. But pubs are Cork's strong point, ranging from older traditional haunts to modern, trendy, if slightly less charismatic places. You will find pubs absolutely everywhere in Cork, but last orders are at 11:30pm from Monday to Thursday and on Sundays. On Friday and Saturday evenings you can keep drinking for an extra hour, but you can also hit a few late bars if the occasion calls for it. An Brog, the Quad and the Slate are popular options of this variety and you'll find alternative or rock music playing at all three into the earlier hours of the morning. For a slightly different crowd, head to Reardens, The Old Oak, Scotts or the Bodega - all of which play chart music and boast a lively atmosphere. Most will have late bars and you will usually find a decent DJ providing the entertainment. Because of the smoking ban, all pubs in Cork have found that they have had to adapt, but many have observed that this has ultimately been beneficial. Beer gardens, for instance, have become hugely popular, as smokers head out and generate a vivacious and enjoyable environment. Tom Barry's is one of the most popular pubs in Cork and its large beer garden is part of the reason for this. You'll find it is generally packed each day of the week, but this contributes towards a fantastic evening out. For a completely different experience, head to Mutton Lane, where they serve beers from all around the world. It is a small, quiet pub just off Cork's main street and it will make you feel as though you have entered an entirely new world. Unsurprisingly for Ireland, there is also a good music scene in Cork and you will discover some great gigs at venues including Cyprus Avenue, Cruscin Lan and the Savoy. And for a bit of culture, try the Cork Opera House or the Everyman Palace Theatre, where you can find a huge variety of concerts, plays and other performances. A cosmopolitan city with an intriguingly local feel, Cork is a sensational place with a stunning nightlife.
