Lisbon Nightlife
Magnificent in the day with an array of architectural and cultural delights, Lisbon also boasts an outstanding nightlife that caters for all tastes and desires. Portugal's capital city has a reputation for friendly bars, lively nightclubs and exquisite restaurants. There are also some excellent concert halls where you can regularly see performances from the country's top musicians and performing artists. The Teatro Sao Carlos is one particularly spectacular setting for a night of culture, but a range of other venues in the city can be enjoyed if you are looking for an understated introduction to Portuguese drama. But after an evening revelling in the literary genius of Portuguese dramatist Gil Vicente, you may well fancy a drink or two and Parque das Nacoes is one of the best places to start. This trendy region has dozens of fantastic restaurants serving a variety of cuisines and also has a number of welcoming bars and cafes. Many stay open until the early hours of the morning and the atmosphere is invariably dynamic. There are also some popular nightclubs in the region that welcome a young and fashionable crowd and drinks tend to be reasonably priced, if you choose your poison wisely. Leaving the modern Parque das Nacoes behind, head over to Bairro Alto - a working class area that boasts a deceptively active nightlife. In the day, you could be forgiven for thinking it is just a sleepy little village, but Bairro Alto has a range of exceptional restaurants and stylish bars and you will find the streets are transformed in the evening when the alcohol is flowing. There are also several boutiques catering for some of the less orthodox fashion tastes and for this reason it draws an interesting if sometimes eccentric crowd. The old quarters in Lisbon are in fact some of the best places for a night out, with bars and clubs that stay open until dawn and local musicians providing you with a soulful soundtrack as you sample the local beverages. But you are truly spoilt for choice in Lisbon, with Av. 24 de Julho another fantastic option. It is full of bustling bars and impressive clubs and is famed for its energetic atmosphere that you are unlikely to forget in a hurry. Av. 24 de Julho is also close to Docas another of Lisbon's top nightspots. Docas is perhaps Lisbon's busiest area, but the nightlife is set against the stunning backdrop of the river. There are few better ways to enjoy an evening than with a few drinks at a table by the river before heading to one of the many popular nightclubs on the strip. The nightlife in Lisbon is hugely varied but consistently enjoyable and a few days in the city will provide you with memories to last a lifetime.
