Nice Nightlife
Nestled on France's south-eastern coast, Nice's Mediterranean location is certainly matched by its steamy and pulsating nightlife. Not cheap by any stretch of the imagination, the city's clubs are very much in the "exclusive" bracket and flashing your wad of euros is definitely the currency when dealing with some of the bigger names on the Nicoise clubbing scene. However, the city does not just cater for the European jet set and a host of fabulous bars and restaurants as well the famous Promenade des Anglais ensures there is a good evening to be had by all in Nice. With a wide choice of pubs, bars and restaurants a typical night out in Nice may well involve the tried and tested formula of some fantastic French cuisine followed by a few beers or excellent wine and rounded off with some dancing in any of the plethora of bars and clubs in the city. The Promenade des Anglais is a long road running parallel to Nice's seafront and is lined with cafes, restaurants and hotels. A cool evening breeze provides a welcome respite from the heat of the day and wandering along the front can be a fantastic way to begin the evening. Nice's old town centre is also blessed with a number of bars and clubs and is another good spot to begin your evening. Try the B52 club on the Descente Crotti for a young crowd it has a small dance floor but is open between 11pm and 4am and has free entry until 1am. For those who like their music more traditional or specialist there are a number of clubs and bars in the city which offer something slightly different from the norm. Blue Whales on the rue Mascoinat is a small venue with a electric atmosphere and live music acts from 10pm onwards all sorts of bands play here ranging from rock to foot-tapping partner-spinning Latin. There is also a great Dutch pub on the same street called De Klomp which offers a staggering 18 beers on tap, 100 bottled beers and 60 whiskies - so hangover-shy punters should approach with caution. Another superb venue that will take many of its visitors back to the good 'ol days of rock and roll is Wayne's on the rue de la Prefecture it offers live bands on Friday and Saturdays and is open from 2.30pm to 1am meaning an early evening boogie is still on the cards. There is also a lively gay scene in Nice with the Blue Boy on rue Jean-Baptiste-Spinetta widely attributed as the best club in town. With two bars and dance floors plus a host of DJs the friendly atmosphere means a guaranteed good night out, while patrons on a Wednesday night will be treated to an astonishing floorshow. Any discussion of Nice's nightlife would simply not be complete without mention of Le Grand Escurial. Certainly not for the un-energetic, it claims to be the largest dance club on the French Riviera and with 16,140 square feet of dancing space it is difficult to argue. Not for the faint hearted, a night at the Escurial will no doubt merge into the following day.
