Krakow Food
Krakow is one of the best places in Poland to enjoy top quality food. Whether it be local delicacies or more exotic tastes that visitors to the city are after, Krakow has something to suit all tastes. Indeed, many businesspeople and residents of Warsaw frequently make the trip to Krakow on the weekend to enjoy the eating and drinking experiences of the city, which are far superior to almost any other place in Poland, including its capital. The vast number of restaurants and cafes which have sprung up across Krakow have given the city intense competition when it comes to food and this has resulted in chefs and waiters doing their best to ensure every meal is a perfect experience for fear that they will lose out to their neighbours and rivals. The heart of the city is where the majority of eateries are inevitably based, as they look to capitalise on the tourist trade. However, these are often at the more expensive end of the range and travellers looking for typically Polish fare may be a little disappointed. Having said that, there is a wide range of restaurants offering diverse menus, giving visitors great choice in what type of food they want to eat. To find some very cheap and hearty meals it's not usually necessary to wander too far off the beaten track. Streets in Krakow to head to for good restaurants include Tomasza, Bracka, Poselska, and Karmelicka, where places to eat often serve large portions of traditional Polish cuisine at low prices. Cheaper restaurants are not hard to come by once you leave the centre of the city, with a Bar Mleczna offering cheap traditional food behind almost every other corner. At the other end of the scale, Krakow also has some top restaurants, presided over by some extremely proficient chefs. So for those travellers considering splashing out on a top meal one evening, Krakow is certainly the place to do it. With a wide variety of choice in terms of both style of restaurant and type of cuisine, Krakow certainly offers something for all food-lovers. The U Pani Stasi 'home-canteen' stands out as one of the city's finest restaurants and is also a favourite with celebrity spotters. The restaurant is a renowned celebrity haunt and is also frequented by an eclectic crowd of artists, professors and those journalists looking to get some celebrity gossip. Another renowned eatery is the 'night stand' by the Hala Targowa which offers hot sausages ideal on a cold Krakow evening! Drinking in Krakow is also an experience filled with choices, as the city boasts an impressive collection of bars and pubs, around the Old Town many of the best pubs are found underground in medieval cellars or along Bracka Street. Perhaps the most interesting place to visit when looking for somewhere to drink, however, is the Kazimierz region of Krakow. Here, it seems that publicans go out of their way to entice visitors in by making their pub more interesting, unusual and downright outrageous than any of the others. As such, many of the pubs here are unorthodox and can offer drinkers a slightly surreal experience.
