Things to do in Cairns
There's no stereotypical Cairns visitor, with the city attracting a refreshingly diverse range of tourists, from wealthy families, outdoorsy travellers and beered-up gap yearers. This diversity means that the city has developed an impressive range of activities, catering for most tastes. Cairns' main attraction is undoubtedly its natural beauty, with not many cities able to claim golden beaches and rich rainforest, not to mention proximity to the Great Barrier Reef. While other, more historical cities, may seduce visitors with impressive architecture and meticulously laid-out public spaces, Cairns knows that its natural beauty is enough, with gazing at the view across Trinity Inlet an activity in itself. Australians are notorious adrenaline junkies and with Cairns as popular with Aussie visitors as foreign tourists, it has learnt to cater for their need for near-death experiences. Bungee jumping, white water rafting and sky diving are among the pursuits on offer. It's not hard to understand how the locals stay in such great shape either, with sporting activities such as cycling, roller-blading and jogging all popular throughout the city. Visitors should also make sure they take a boat trip out to the barrier reef, with many tour operators also offering diving trips and the chance to get close to reef is not to be missed. Cairns claims to offer plenty for cultural lovers as well, although it does appear that "culture" means dining in sophisticated restaurants. The city can't claim to have as many museums, galleries or opera houses as its European rivals, although what is there is worth visiting. The Cairns Museum details life in the tropical north while the Cairns Art Gallery promotes indigenous art. The Flecker Botanic Gardens will satisfy anyone that still hasn't had their fill of nature, known for its stunning collection of exotic and tropical plants. The Tjapukai Cultural Park is owned and run by local aborigines and offers an alternative look at Australian history. The park still caters for the postcard image of Australia, however, offering demonstrations in didgeridoo playing and boomerang throwing.
