Things to do in Sydney
Sydney is one of the most vibrant and exciting cities in the world. It is lucky enough to be blessed with a number of natural attractions at well as awe-inspiring skyscrapers, amazing shopping and some of the most friendly and laid-back people in the world. There is so much to do in Sydney that it will keep even the most adventurous of tourists entertained. The harbour and the opera house are certainly the defining characteristics of the city and are the first things you see when you fly into Sydney's international airport. Sydney harbour is well worth a visit and its rocky islands and stunning beaches make it one of the most beautiful stretches of water in the world. Some of the most scenic areas of the harbour are those on the ocean side of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Visitors can climb the bridge for some spectacular views of the city or simply admire its splendour from the security of the ground. Perhaps one of the best ways to enjoy the harbour is to go sailing around it or take the ferry to Manly which travels around the bay. A trip to the famous Sydney Opera House is a definite must if only to admire its beautiful architecture or to spend the day in Circular Quay. The quay is built around the Sydney Cove and is considered by many to be the focal point of the city. This area used to be the shipping centre of Sydney but is now a recreational hub, which plays host to nunber of bars, restaurants and cafes, as well as beautiful parks and the Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA). The MCA is situated at the front of Circular Quay and is set in a breathtaking Art Deco building. The museum houses a range of modern art from Australia and the rest of the world, including sculpture, painting, installations and the moving image. The MCA also has a good shop and a number of cafes that serve a range of top-class food. Another popular part of the city with tourists as well as locals is Darling Harbour. This waterfront leisure park comprises a number of picturesque walkways and gardens, as well as an array of museums, a convention centre, an aquarium and shops and restaurants. It was once a dockland area but was developed in the 1980s as a leisure centre and is a pleasant place to spend a day in Sydney. Some of the highlights include the Sydney Aquarium. The aquarium's three 'oceanariums' are in fact moored in the harbour and one contains some of the most impressive big fish in the world, including some menacing sharks. Visitors can walk under the tanks via transparent tunnels. The Great Barrier Reef section should not be bypassed as it contains some of the most beautiful corals and tropical fish in the world. To see some more of Australia's wildlife, take a trip to Taronga Zoo. It is a short ferry ride away from Circular Quay and has some of the most amazing views of the city. The zoo houses over 3,000 endangered and rare critters. There are also plenty of opportunities to have your picture taken with Koalas and Kangaroos. To make the most of Sydney's almost year-round temperate climate, visitors are advised to visit its most famous beach Bondi. It is one of the most awesome beaches in the world and the suburb of Bondi will keep visitors entertained for days on end. The seafront promenade makes for a pleasant afternoon and there are a number of cheap bars, restaurants and cafes to enjoy. Sydney really is a city that has it all. From a cultural trip to the famous opera house to surfing the waves on Bondi, this Australian city is sure to keep even the most adventurous of travellers entertained 24/7.
