Stockholm Nightlife
Stockholm's official tourism guide boasts that the capital has little competition from any other city in terms of nightlife north of Paris and London. With a diverse mix of venues and events on offer it seems that this boast may indeed be true. The Sodermalm district is one area which should not be missed by those tourists travelling on a slightly lower budget. Numerous bars are packed with a younger generation, creating a different and more bohemian feel than other districts in the city. Some of the most popular among the bars include Kvarnen, Folkhemmet, and the chic Ost 100. Sodermalm is also home to Mondo, a vast cultural centre with three stages, four dancefloors, five bars, a cinema, restaurant and gallery. The area is also popular due to its close proximity to Stockholm's city centre. For those looking for a more lively club scene, Stureplan and Kungsgatan are the districts to head for. As one of the city's main entertainment districts, the area is packed with discotheques and clubs. Glamorous nights out can be had at Sturecompagniet and the extravagant Spy Bar, although for the latter a strict door policy ensures the well-dressed and beautiful slip through the doors most easily. Berns Salonger, famous for its classic interior, is great for those looking to not have to travel far on their night out; a Conran eaterie, bars, a nightclub and a hotel ensure that everything you could want on a night out are just a stone's throw from each other. Old school glamour can be found at the Casino Cosmopol. Located in Kungsgatan, the casino operates a dress code and is for over 20s only. For those who fit the bill, the casino provides numerous slot machines as well as classic games such as Roulette, Black Jack, Punto Banco and poker. It also houses restaurants and bars, providing all you need to have a lively night out with a spot of gambling. Famous for its lively and welcoming atmosphere, gays and lesbians will find that Stockholm has a thriving nightlife. Numerous bars and clubs with rainbow flags are found in particular around Mariatorget and the Stockholm Sodra train station, while the city boasts that it has the best leather club in Scandanavia. Particularly welcoming bars include Mandus, Torget, Side Track, Spisa hos Helena and Babs Bar. Away from the bars and nightclubs, it is easy to spend an evening at one of Stockholm's numerous cultural venues. With more than 70 stages, arenas and venues, the capital regularly plays host to the premieres of plays, films and shows, including theatre, opera and avant-garde dance performances. The districts of Vasastan and Kungsholmen are also a safe bet for those looking for areas with lively restaurant and entertainment scenes. With such a diverse array on offer there is plenty for visitors to do during the evening, from cheaper nights out in lively bars to sophisticated club nights amidst Stockholm's most well-heeled residents.
