Munich Nightlife
Germans are famous for their love of beer and nowhere is that more true than in Bavaria. Munich revels in its privileged position as the capital of this region and as such does not shy away from letting its locals enjoy the array of local beers. There are beer halls aplenty in Munich and despite the sophistication of being a modern city at the heart of European enterprise and manufacturing, the city still finds plenty of space for the traditional beer-lovers. So to indulge in some traditional nightlife of Munich, a trip to one of the city's many beer halls is well worth the visit, especially during the balmy summer evenings, when beer gardens seem to spring forth from almost every street corner in the suburbs. Many of the beer halls will be packed with a surprising mix of locals and tourists, highlighting the eternal charm of the traditional halls, and the mixture provides for a generally loud and enjoyable event. It is certainly a good place for visitors to get to know people, as many of the halls contain long rows of benches and tables, meaning that there is no place to simply hide in the corner having a quiet drink! For those who want to enjoy a more sophisticated drink in the evening, the business area of the city has a number of trendy wine bars and restaurants, but these are the typical places that could be found anywhere in Europe and are generally far more expensive and much less interesting than the more traditional beer halls and gardens. The most famous of all German beer halls is the impressive Hofbrauhaus, although the usual mix of locals and visitors is generally replaced by tourists. Locals tend to avoid the Hofbrauhaus because of the huge numbers of travellers who head straight for the place, not to mention the fact that the beer tends to be cheaper round the corner where the proprietors cannot cash in on the famous name! but despite that it is still worth a visit, as the band plays traditional Bavarian music all day long and there is always a lively atmosphere, thanks largely to the merry tourists. During the summer months, the English Garden can be an ideal place to enjoy the warm evenings as it hosts a large beer garden. Placed near the bandstand, typical German bands can often be found playing for the beer-swilling public. But this city has much to offer aside from the traditional beer. For one, it hosts a range of world-class opera and classical music events throughout the year and music fans can often catch concerts from a range of artists spanning all tastes. Munich also has a wide array of nightclubs which will suit all tastes, from pop to rock to dance. And if you're lucky you might even find yourself hanging out with some of the region's top celebrities, such as German international and Bayern Munich goalkeeping legend, Oliver Khan, who has been seen enjoying a night out in a number of the city's night spots during his long career at the club.
