New York Nightlife
It is no surprise that New York is often called 'the city that never sleeps', as there is possibly no livelier city at night on the planet. Visitors often remark that the famous Times Square is more vibrant at midnight than most other cities at midday. World famous performers seem to be on show in New York every single week, while the immense variety of bars, clubs, comedy clubs, theatres and restaurants means that there is never a dull evening in New York, no matter your age or taste. A night-time walk along Broadway, New York's most famous street, is an essential activity for any visitor. With huge neon billboards advertising the latest show or performer, even residents are still dazzled by the bright lights and adrenalin that engulfs Broadway. Famous theatres such as the Shubert Theatre, the Apollo, the Lyceum and the Empire are just a few of the many hosting the biggest American and international musicals and dramas with the best performers on stage. It is often possible to get hold of reduced price tickets to one of the shows, which comes highly recommended. Choosing a nightclub or bar to spend an evening in New York is a hugely overwhelming task, with just about every imaginable venue on offer. With smoky jazz clubs, teenage discos, pulsating dance venues, gay bars, lively salsa joints, country-western bars, performance art clubs and elegant hotel piano bars, the list is almost endless and there is unquestionably something for everyone and every budget. A favourite haunt with tourists and New Yorkers alike is the city's most famous jazz club, Blue Note, in the bohemian Greenwich Village district. Hosting some of music's greatest Jazz musicians, the venue is certainly not cheap but well-worth the visit. Also in Greenwich Village and demonstrating the eclectic mix of venues on offer in New York, is Bowlmor Lanes, where punters enjoy glow-in-the-dark bowling to a disco soundtrack. The Nuyorican Poets Café offers visitors a more enlightening side to New York, with poetry, music, visual arts, comedy and theatre on show daily. Laugh Lounge nyc and Caroline's on Broadway are two of the many comedy bars which will ensure your sides are aching by the end of the night, thanks to the top quality stand-up they host. Spectrum Disco in Brooklyn will transport visitors right back to the 1970s, with its illuminated dance floor, disco ball, shag carpeting and 70s-style lighting. Those wishing for a taste of home will also find a whole host of British and Irish themed bars which are often very lively and reasonably priced. Those looking for something a bit more sophisticated can head to the Lincoln Centre, which is home to the Metropolitan Opera, the New York City Ballet and the New York Philharmonic among others. On the opposite end of the scale, seedy Chinatown bars are popular with groups wishing to sing their hearts out to karaoke in a red vinyl booth, while sipping an extremely cheap cocktail. With this and so much more on offer, there is never a dull night in New York and the city's nightlife is just waiting to be explored.
