Australia Surfboard Challenge
Sydney, Australia -
26 January 2007
This surfboard contest is held in Sydney to mark Australia Day and is popular with both tourists and locals alike.
Australia Day celebrates what's great about the country and being Australian, so it seems fitting that one of the nation's favourite past times is celebrated in Sydney.
One of the best vantage points to watch the day's action is from the Sydney opera house, close to the main event area and the surfing break.
The event starts at 08:30 and is wrapped up before midday, when the hundreds of surfers get down to the serious business of eating lunch.
Seven-time surfing world champion Layne Beachley is the patron of the event and continues to support the day.
Although entries for most of the event are now closed, young adults and adults can still enter the 2km race on the day.
Overall, the event is quite a sight, with Sydney Harbour closed so thousands of people can wade around in the water with arms and legs flailing.
