Birthday of Haile Selassie
Ethiopia -
23 July 2006
Emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia was revered across the world by his followers as the human incarnation of God.
The founder of Rastafarianism, he is celebrated by his devotees with the same fervour and affection as Jesus Christ is to faithful Christians.
Similarly, his birthday is a date of celebration for all his followers across the globe and none more so than in his home country of Ethiopia.
Concerts, gatherings and rallies will take place throughout Ethiopia in celebration of Haile Selassie, while Rastafarian pilgrims travel to the country to pay homage to the King of Kings and the Conquering Lion of the Tribe of Judah, as he is known to his people.
While there is no organised form of worship, this means that the events which take place in his honour can be hugely diverse, depending on where in the country you visit. But one thing for sure is that there will be plenty of reggae music heralding Haile Selassie.
