Liked: The building has character.

Disliked: I would NOT recommend this place. My boyfriend lay down on the bed for 20 minutes and he noticed some bugs crawling on the head rest of the bed. He squashed one and it was full of blood. We took it to the manager and he put us in another room but it was too late. In the morning he was covered in bites all over his back and arms. All the manager did was change the sheets in the bed but the bugs were obviously in the straw head rest. Good luck to anyone who gets that room in future (I think it was number 39...). The manager was also really rude and doesn't really deserve the amount of custom he gets.

Liked: Charming old house in very central location.

Disliked: No internet or breakfast available, very close to the city centre, cafes, bars and internet places though.

Liked: NOTE: When paying on check out, DO NOT trust the "currency rate" advertised with the room rates at reception on the wall. The owner pointed to this sign and said the currency rate of $1.00USD = 24 Uruguay Peso . Whereas the actual rate on that day was $1.00USD = 19.5 Uruguay Peso. after a lot of arguing he came down to 20 Peso to a Dollar. Still overcharged, but we had to catch our bus. He will tell you that his currency rate is the same as 'Cambio' (a currency exchange) down the road, this was not true either. Otherwise the room was spacious, not all rooms were though, some were windowless. No internet access, and street traffic is extremely loud because of the bad insulation. P.S This is not a hostel, its a budget hotel.

Liked: The hotel is cheap and it is a place to sleep and take a bath. This can be done quite peacefuly if you adapt to the peculiarities of the place.The exchange rate they use is absurd, much larger than usual in the Hostels of Montevideo and the region.Also, if you leave pretty early in the morning they do not have change to give you. It is better to be prepared for it and make they find a way to exchange money (which is an obligation of them) or pay during the day.

Liked: good location if you're looking to be near the old part of Montevideo, not so good for the beaches (we had to take a bus.)

Liked: We had a nice stay at this hotel, it had alot of character.It was close to town ,was clean, had a tv,and was good value for money.It doesnt have wifi but there is an internet shop down the road which charges just 16 pesos per hour.We will saty there again.

Liked: big rooms with high ceilings. Rooms have Tv. Clean. Most rooms dont have windows but fortunately we could change..and it looks like a horror hotel but for the rest its pretty ok

Liked: Hotel Arapey is not a hostel, it's a very cheap hotel. It's very basic. The inward facing rooms without windows smell quite musty. The decoration is interesting!

Liked: This hostel was one of the coolest ones I stayed in over a 1 month period in S. America. Our room was huge, and full of character (good character, not bad!! For example, wood floors, very high ceiling, etc). Clean bathrooms and hot showers. Good location. Definitely recommended.

Liked: It is fabulously over decorated and resembles something out of a Miss Marple set. Super clean and mega cheap. Bloke on reception is a miserable so and so but you can't have it all. Word of advice though, pay in cash dollars (to avoid their criminal exchnage rate and 4% Visa fee) and have the right money. They do not have change (or rather they do but woiuld rather not part with it) and will insist that this is somehow your fault and that you need to rectify it (by trawling round for a casino at 11pm) with no effort on their part. Still, I would stay again as it is so cheap.

Liked: Not without its minor annoyances - dodgy shower and TV - but undeniable value for money for a central location. Looks like it hasnt changed since the 30s when it was probably at the top end of hotels in Montevideo! A memorable three night stay!!!
