USEFUL INFORMATION
Before being Portimão, the local was denominated as “Portus Hannibalis”, Aníbal port, whom was the owner of fenician trade center.

In the Roman period, was baptized as “Portus Magnum” because of the importance of its river and port.

No one knows for sure when the place was conquered by the Arabs. Probably in the same time that was Silves as well. One of the crusaders that were going to conquer Silves gave the location name Porcimunt, a word provinient from the arab and means "The Tower of the farm".

The small village developed from 12th century when the Arade River was no longer navigable and did not allow the commerce travelling to Silves and was know done in Portimão, for being also closed to the ocean.

Portimão grow along the years and King José I elevated as Vila Nova de Portimão in 1773 and in 1924 Portimão became a town.

The location of Portimão was always a trade centre with other people, coming through the river and the ocean, and maintains along the centuries a strong maritime fishing tradition.

For centuries fishing was the main economical activity of the town, along with conserve factories.

And still today Portimão has the 2nd most important Port of the Algarve.

Its beach is Praia da Rocha with its long sandy beach and where is one of the great amusement nights of the region.

- The museum made from an ancient Conserve “Fabrica Feu” that tells the story of the town’s past connected to the fishing;
- Sta. Catharina Fortress in Praia da Rocha edified by King João II;
- Ferragudo on the opposite site of Portimão where is a castle edified by King João II today is a private residence.
