Liked: It is right in the city centre, right near the train station and on the main street. Everything is literally a minutes walk away.

Disliked: We booked to stay at the Dam Hotel. They booked us into their Orange Tulip hostel next door. My problem with this was that they put us on the first floor where they were doing renovations of the hallway so we had to walk through a tarp curtain and through the worksite to get to our room which was the only one on the floor. When you opened the bathroom door the toilet was in the doorway so you had to basically sit in the door way to go to the bathroom. Also, outside the bedroom window were syringes. I complained and we finally got moved to the Dam Hotel where we had booked in the first place. The lady at the counter said they were the same hotel but in different buildings but i did not feel comfortable staying in the first one so was glad to move. The rooms are very small but when your travelling you dont need to spend that much time in them so it was adequate. The bed was so soft that it dipped in the middle but i guess its better than sleeping on a cardboard thin mattress

Liked: It is really central to Amsterdam central station, Dam square, coffee shops and the red light district.

Disliked: Small, over priced room for a private double room. The main hallway was being renovated so it was an inconvenience. If you're only in the room to sleep and get ready it's the best location - minus the price tag.

Liked: It was clean, although there was a bad smell when we first entered the room

Disliked: We were not expecting bunk beds, we were not told about the extra tax cost, we were only given one room key, it was expensive for what we got!

Liked: Location is superb!! Only about 300 meters from centraal station where you can catch all city buses and trams, or catch the Euro Rail to your next destination. Coffee shops and tons of shopping are literally at the bottom of the stairs!

Disliked: Not much to dislike. For what you pay the hostel is perfect!

Liked: only that is was located on Damrack -

Disliked: no lift.. the single bedroom private I had was no bigger then a UK jail cell..! apart from the bathroom bit - that was also small and when using the loo if your a tall person your knees hit the sink!!! The hotel is not even called Dam Hotel.. its now called Dam Orange Tulip or some thing..

Liked: The hotel is situated a minutes walk from the red light district, near the grasshopper pub and central station. My single en-suite was pretty small but offered a wardrobe with a security coded safe-box and the bathroom was fully working with a decent shower. 24 hr reception is always good too. You might find that your room is actually in a building two doors down from the reception, but you can just press the buzzer and give your room number to be let in. Just be careful on the stairs as they are very steep and curvy. There is a lift located on the 1st floor in case you need to go any higher.

Disliked: A single room is pretty small, but i didn't see this as a problem due to the location of the hotel. Also, on arrival my bill was actually 15 euros more than stated when i booked online (local tax i assume) We also found out that there is no wi-fi, just a couple of computers in the reception area in the other building. If you are just looking for somewhere to get your head down before going back out into the streets of Amsterdam then this place does the job. If you like hotels with food, lobbies, extra services than this isn't for you.

Liked: Excellent location, friendly and helpful staff. Sort of got an upgrade to Hotel Damrak, which belongs to the same owner(according to reception), so i dont really know the exact condition of Dam Hotel. Still, if the management is the same, the quality shouldn't differ so much.

Disliked: Rather tough to access to the rooms thru' the narrow stairs, but thats the case throughout the whole of Amsterdam. Signboard could be a little more obvious as there are way too many signboards and advertisements on the whole stretch of buildings.
