Liked: When I arrived at Qaser al-Bint Hotel, I was greeted with a friendly "welcome" and was invited to enjoy a nice of tea with the manager. As I had arrived quite early in the day, I was pleasantly surprised to find that my room was ready. I asked if I could pay with a credit card, and he replied "visa, master card, euro, USD, whatever you want", and that I could pay at the end of my stay. So far so good.
Disliked: I then went to my room. I had been traveling for a couple weeks already and had always stayed in shared dorms, so I treated myself to a single room for this stay. The room did not have air conditioning as was advertised, but it had a fan that I could have all to myself, and I figured that would be enough. I soon found out the hard way that the toilet was not running, also the cold water taps in the sink and shower did not work. I informed the manager and he told me it would be fixed in three minutes. Fifteen minutes later he seemed confused when I told him they were still not working. He moved me to a different room, with a double bed at no extra charge. This one had an air conditioner, but when I asked how to turn it on (note that this was in early-mid August), he became very irritated, saying that electricity costs so much here, and only allowed me to turn it on after I agreed to pay 4 dinar per night extra, then he retrieved the remote from behind the reception desk where he had hidden it. I finally had my room, a bed, running water, and AC. One side of the box spring had a huge hole in it, so I doubt two people could sleep there comfortably, good thing it was just me. The shower barely trickled water, but I could live with it. The toilet slowly dripped water onto the floor, but I had my shower sandals, so I dealt with it. Then checkout came. He asked me to show him my confirmation email so that he knew how much to charge. He took that amount, added 8 dinar for two nights with AC, and about 5 dinar for tax (first time I've paid tax in addition to the total balance due quoted by hostelbookers, maybe it was legit, but I'm skeptical). I tried to hand him my credit card, which on check in he told me was perfectly acceptable, he looked at it and asked "don't you have cash?" I told him that I was budgeting my cash and needed to use a card, and he begrudgingly accepted it. He swiped it a couple of times with no success, so I gave him a different card, still no dice. He played it off as though something was wrong, and maybe it was, but I wouldn't put it passed him to close his visa account and pretend it doesn't work when people try to use it, that's the kind of impression I got from this guy, but again, maybe something really was not working as it should have (my same card worked just fine two days later at my next hotel). I finally just gave him cash an left. It was hands down and by far the worst hostel/hotel experience I've ever had, and I've had many. Hopefully they'll change their act, but I would not recommend staying here unless there are more recent reviews saying that it no longer the deceitful collapsing mess that I stayed in.
