Liked: Keeping in mind it is Hong Kong and hostels and hotels are quite expensive, I think its a good deal. We got a better room than what we had booked, (one bed was bigger) and the lady who received us was really nice, got to the hostel around 10:30 am and got our room right away, even known its a busy season. We wanted to go to Disney one day and they helped us with the tickets (saved $20 each and a line) and the location is good, close from everything we needed.

Disliked: there are way to many "foreigners" trying to sell things as soon as you go out in the first floor, and we kind of bump into a few people "smoking" on the staircase. It gets kind of loud at 6 am when people starts going out of the building.

Liked: Nothinggg hate the taiwan luxe hostell

Disliked: the receptionist is really rude and impolite. We Got a room with a broken door and every single time that we had to go to our room we had to ask the lady to open the door and sometimes we had to wait like 16 min for her to open the door. The room is dirty and the toilet sucks. Don t book there!!

Liked: I liked the fact that it belonged to a general bottom floor of diverse cultures. Walking into the building you definitely feel as though you're traveling; by which you can take in foods from all stretches of the globe and get your custom made suit at the same time if that's your thing. That's about as far as my "likes" go. I suppose the showers are decent as well.

Disliked: The "staff" is one lady who speaks broken English at the speed of an auctioneer. I think it's her strategy to get as much money out of you as possible; by this I mean while checking in she tried to say our room didn't have a personal bathroom but for 50 h.k.d. per person more she would do us a favor and upgrade our room. Shenanigans. All the rooms have their own bathrooms she just wanted to take advantage of some backpackers and pocket the cash. We told her we didn't need our own bathroom and she quickly backpeddled saying "ok ok I'll just give you guys the nicer room on the house." Now for the room itself. Tiny little four walled space with very short pieces of foam that I guess are beds. The wallpaper is kept on with tape, the floors are littered with whatever foreign objects you can imagine and the a.c. is antartica or sahara. If I seem a bit apprehensive towards tai wan hostel its because all the while asleep we were visited by, I'll say hoards, yeah hoards is good, of little cockroach esque insects crawling over you while you sleep. I'm not sure if they were bed bugs but squashing them meant blood squirting everywhere. So if you're a HEAVY sleeper or have skin like a rhinoceros you'll have a proper slumber. If that's not how you'd describe yourself maybe consider another place to shack up in Hong Kong. - A tired, touchy and bug ridden traveler.

Liked: The female stuff are good. The location of the building is really good and it gave a totally unexpected Hong Kong for us!

Disliked: They didn't hold a room for you before you arrived, we have to wait for a long time for them to settle all the guests. Besides, we have to switch the room for another day. And they are not like to show you the way of the room while they arrange a room located at the next block of the building. The mosssssssssssssssst horrible thing is that there is a lot of bugsssssssssssss all over the room even on the bed. It is okay when you can sleep with itch! HK $ 300 something is totally not worth !!!

Disliked: Basically the worst hostel experience I have ever had (And I have traveled very extensively throughout the world). I had been traveling since 4am with two flights and arrived at the hostel at around 10pm (all I wanted to do was sleep basically). The 4 bed dorm could hardly fit the beds and the mattresses were like rocks, but thats not the problem. After about 2 hours, the power went out. The owner came banging on all the doors yelling that someone charged an appliance with too high voltage (literally yelling) which wasn't the case. Instead the air con set it off and therefore did not work for the rest of the night. Completely angry, the owner got a fan and had to set it up in the hallway facing our room with the door open. Next day met another couple that broke a key in their door...owner blamed it on them and completely went nuts. Moral of the story: dont stay here!

Liked: the value for money is really ok, for such a big city as HongKong. and the staff welcomed us really late, which is pleasant.

Disliked: It was not so clean, especially the bathroom. moreover, the sickle quite bad and we had to let the door opened to receive the signal. lockers in dorms would be great !

Liked: I like the fact that is is well located in Hong Kong, near Tsim sha tsui. The staff were very grumpy though. When I simply asked whether I could still cancel the second night 30 hours beforehand, they got very agressive telling me how crazy/stupid I am that I even ask about that. Very rude, and unnecessary as I was just asking politely.

Liked: It seems that if you want a cheap place to stay than this "hostel" at Chunking Mansion might be your only choice as there are just one or two more hostels (YHA, didn't find it here on hostelbookers) in Hong Kong. Book in advanced because it's really hard to find a room/bed on arrival without booking! It is clean, the location is perfect as it is only a few minutes to the star ferry or the malls, parks and markets, the owner was helpfull, but...

Disliked: ...he first starts yelling at you and then finds a solution for your problems. We booked 2 beds in a 8 bed dorm but when we arrived, we were given a tiny private 2 bed room where you even can'T stretch your legs! He said we should be lucky to have a more secure and private accomodation, but his so called "free upgrade" had a very noisy AC so you better bring some ohropax. We had to change the rooms 2 times, first to move to a 6 bed dorm (more space with a private bathroom) and second to a 4 bed dorm due to a pipe burst which happened when we were in the city. When we came back, all our stuff was put to the new room and fortunately everything was fine and nothing got lost - but so strange and inconvenient! To extend your stay you better tell the owner a long time in advance and get it confirmed twice to be sure as he changes plans in a snap. If you don't mind any of these downsides you are good to check in.

28 July 2011

Liked: The location is great.

Disliked: Rooms are actually closets with bunk beds crammed in. Our first room's air conditioning recycled dank musty air rather than cooling anything so the room became a tiny sweatbox where sleep was impossible (the bed/room was not even long enough to lie down unless you're under 5'9). The staff was unfriendly and inflexible and tried to milk us for extra money. Really unpleasant stay, but then again Hong Kong is so expensive there's not a lot of other options if you don't have a lot of money.

Liked: Location Good Wifi in room Lots of good curry houses in the same complex

Disliked: The comments are based on room 91 which we stayed in :Room had bed bugs- got eaten alive by them. The four bed dorm we stayed in would struggle getting a double bed in. Beds were so small I had to sleep diagonally with feet hanging over the edge. Room was generally filthy-cleaner basically swept the floor as part of the 'house-keeping' and stocked up the toilet roll. Only one plug socket shared between four people. En-suite bathroom was basically a shower cubical with a toilet and sink in it- extremely small! No individual light/shelving unit per bunk like lots of hostels. Nowhere to put luggage, no lockers. Air con was good except it leaked and didn't work for a while. No window in room. Whole place had a bad odour and can still smell it on our clothes after leaving.

Disliked: everything from being ripped off when i first got there (tried to upgrade me to a 4 share room without asking if i wanted to pay the extra and still charged me extra). People i talked to found cockroaches and when they confronted reception they were told that they brought them with them! The staff are just rude all the time. half of the computers for the internet either dont work or run far too slowly to do anything on them.

Liked: Location in downtown Hong Kong in a strange multi-cultural, multi-hostel comlex on the biggest mainstreet...

Disliked: The room is very small, with no window and no ac or fan in the 11th floor - which makes it unbelievable hot and humid. It smells like you dry some clothes in it for a few weeks and don't let in some fresh air in this time! The sheets smell worser then I ever had before (and I went through India and SE Asia on a very low budget...)! The resceptionist tried to trick us in giving us a more expensive 2 bed room instead of the 8 bed room we booked
