Liked: location

Disliked: I would avoid this hostel if at all possible. The staff is very unfriendly. Wifi is really bad and you will get yelld at trying to skype your family because it slowes down the internet but the guy behind the desk will download 3 movies at once slowing it down even worse. Plus you have to cram into a tiny room with ten other travelers to use the internet because it is the only place in the hostel it works. Breakfast is bad too and the rooms are stale.

Liked: Rooms were large and comfortable.

Disliked: If you want a good night's sleep, book an upstairs ensuite room. The non-ensuite rooms are located downstairs, and open onto the common courtyard. While there are signs which state that there is "quiet time" at night time, I was kept awake both nights by revellers having a great time outside my room. If you're the party type, joining them is your best option. The upstairs rooms, however, do not haev the same noise problems, as my friends gleefully told me when I was cranky from no sleep.

Liked: They can book tours and buses for you. The mine tour was really good and cheap too. Nice beds and clean rooms.

Disliked: they say they have hot water 24 hours a day, however there are only 4 communal showers for about 50+ people, so there is never any hot water. They say breakfast starts at 7:30, however that is when they start cooking it. It actually starts at about 8 and if you aren't first in line, you can wait up to 30 minutes. They don't speak english much at all and they are a bit dodgy with their bookings. They tried to say that our booking was cancelled when it wasn't and they even got the dates all wrong. This also happend to at least 2 other people while we stayed there. So be careful.

Disliked: The Casona does not what is promises. Its bad value for money. Not clean, becauase bad-bugs. very old sheets. Althoug they have electric heating they are unwilling to use it. Staff just wants to sell you tours to the mines.

Liked: Enough space to meet people, calm. Good posibility to buy bus-tickets to other citys. Breakfast was pretty good. I met a bunch of kind travellers.

Disliked: As many locations of this character, everything is in english and not even the hostelrules are written in spanish. I don't travel Bolivia to practise English. Unfriendly kitchenstaff and not kind staff in general. Some guys I met there were thrown out of the kitchen because they started cooking something at noon and they only allow it beginning from afternoon. Of course, this rule was also written in English and they only understood Spanish - you may think it's enough to speak the official language of a country but in this case it isn't.

Liked: This hotel-hostel is very cheap and close to town.

Disliked: Unfortunately during our stay the bathrooms were all continually absolutely filthy and disgusting. I don´t think they were cleaned at all ever. Staff are around but won´t go out of their way to help you if they can avoid it, which they will do. Sheets were thread bare with holes although clean. Breakfast is included in the very cheap price and it was basic and reasonable - the usual Bolivian brekkie.

Liked: beautiful courtyard, could be a great hostel if only the staff were a bit friendlier and more helpful

Disliked: staff not very helpful or friendly, didn´t bother explaining where all the hostel facilities were or what services they offered (even though they supposedly offered plenty). Showers cold, dirty and no hooks to hang clothes or towels from which was very annoying as the floors were wet and dirty.

Liked: I stayed in a single room with ensuite. It was a large, well-furnished room with a powerful, hot shower and cable tv.

Disliked: The staff are really quite unfriendly and not particularly helpful. Fairly expensive considering there are other comparable hostels nearby that are much cheaper. You even have to provide your own soap!

Liked: I would not recommend this hostel. The staff were unfriendly until they had some money in their hands at which point they donned fake smiles, they seemed to screw up everyone's reservation that stayed there and perhaps worse of all got really angry with some of the guests staying there for getting back at 10:30pm which they deemed way past curfew (they had shut all lights off in the whole hostel before this time) and shouted at them that they shouldn't treat the place as their home. To serve them right most of the hostel stayed out til 4am the next night :) I would also not recommend booking the mining tour through them... they use Greengo tours (a great tour agency which I definitely DO recommend) but take a B$25 commission which I think is greedy - so if you do end up there for some reason book direcly with the Greengo office - a short stroll away in town. The hostel also charges you B$5 to watch a pirate dvd on their television screen which I again thought greedy. Especially as the film they showcase every night - the devil's minor - has cheated out it's 'star' of cash forcing him to remain a miner until only 2 weeks ago (a total of 10 years). The hostel could at least give the B$5pp to his family or towards miner's healthcare instead of lining their already greedy and grumpy pockets with even more undeserved cash.Do not stay there.

Liked: It is a good place, however we have to say that yesterady there was a big group of people drinking heavilly in the lobby and they where very noisy until late. There are rules in the hostel proihibiting noise until late, however yesterday nobody kicked them out. We stayed 3 nights and we belive it was an isolated incident.

Customer review

20 January 2010

Liked: If you do read this, please remember that I really am not a fussy person, and I have stayed in hundreds of hotels around the world that have been absolutely brilliant. The Casona hostel itself is set in a great location and the building has the potential to be made into a top hostel. Unfortunately the staff appear so inept at even the simplest of tasks (a smile would be a good start), that making this place anything better than disappointing seems a long way off. The breakfast is simple, which is perfectly acceptable, but when you have to set aside half the morning for it to arrive, and every dish is served with a lump of bitterness from the staff, it really isn´t worth it. The laundry service is a joke. The poor backroom staff turn it round v quickly, but then it´s left in a pile mixed with everyone else´s things for you to take your pick at what you say is yours. The bathrooms were absolutely disgusting. In the first place it´s clear that 1 or 2 of the customers were a disgrace for causing the mess, but the fact that toilet seats were left in the shower, and the cleaning was left for at least 2 days, didn´t help matters. The sheets weren´t changed on the beds from the previous occupants. Finally, the staff made us feel like every thing they did for us, which really wasn´t much, was a massive favour. Not a fan of this at all.Frank
