About Clair Tappaan Lodge

The Civic Guest House offers you clean and tidy budget shared and private accommodation. Need some help selecting what to see and do in Townsville and the surrounding Region? No problem. We can book various trips and tours for you. F Built by Sierra Club volunteers in the 1930s, the lodge is an excellent home base for year-round recreation. The friendly, casual atmosphere and affordable nightly rates (including family-style meals) make the Lodge the perfect rustic getaway to the Tahoe/Donner area.

Clair Tappaan is the Sierra Club's flagship lodge, with a wide-variety of programs that support sustainable practices and the Sierra Club's mission to "explore, enjoy and protect the wild places of the Earth." At the Lodge, we strive to increase awareness of the environment, foster a sense of community, increase the spirit of volunteerism, and nurture coconscious conduct.

The ambience of the Clair Tappaan Lodge is evident in the spacious living room that boasts an enormous stone fireplace and antique ski memorabilia.
The warm and cozy library offers an inviting space for those who wish to curl up with a good book or research the Sierra Nevada. Guests can soak their aching muscles in the hot tub after a day filled with outdoor activities, so be sure to bring your bathing suit.

A hearty cooked breakfast and dinner are prepared each day by the professional kitchen staff and are served family-style in the Lodge's large dining room. Brown bag lunch provisions are available for guests to take with them each day. Family style meals are served twice a day. A vegetarian meal option is available for every meal. Guests with other dietary restrictions can usually be accommodated, provided that the lodge staff is informed in advance. Meals are included in the price. Dinner is at 6 pm except on Sunday when it is at 5 pm.

All accommodations are in bunk beds equipped with mattresses (bring your own sleeping bag or bedding). A variety of room types and sizes are available. Restroom and shower facilities are shared, with two men's and two women's bathrooms (bring your own towel).

When snow is not on the ground, Clair Tappaan Lodge is an excellent base for numerous activities in the Sierra. Activities include hiking, swimming, fishing, road/mountain biking, rock climbing, and photography.

In the winter, you can rent equipment at the Lodge and cross-country ski right from the back door. The Lodge is also very close to premier downhill ski areas.

Guests need to provide their own toiletries, towel, sleeping bag or comparable linens, and bathing suit if they wish to use the hot tub. We ask guests to choose a house chore to do each day they eat at the lodge.

Doors to the rooms do not lock; we do have lockers. If you wish to lock up valuables, you can bring your own lock or rent one from the lodge office.

Phone messages for guests are posted periodically in the lobby area.

No pets of any species (except Seeing Eye dogs) are allowed to stay at the Lodge.

From the road/parking lot to the lodge there is an uphill path about 100 yards long. In the winter it can be snowy/icy, and in the summer it can be rocky. Therefore, a good pair of hiking boots or sturdy walking shoes is advisable. A flashlight can be handy if you plan to arrive at night.

Each day they stay at the Lodge, guests will be expected to perform a brief chore in keeping with the communal nature of the Lodge experience.

Bring your membership card or most recent copy of SIERRA magazine in order to receive your member discount. Free barbeque Friday nights at 6pm.
