Friendly staff. Great location, near union square and mission street. Excellent facilities. The hostel offers a series of events, like free walking tour, pub crawls, etc and maps & infos of the city touristic points. Huge Lockers.
The atmosphere, the people, the events, the cleanliness, the security, the staff, all of it! This is a really great hostel that sets you up so you can meet people easily. I met some great friends here that I continued to travel with. the hostel has information about all the popular attractions that is easily accessible. All around, it's just a really well run hostel!

Green Tortoise was a great choice, good people, nice atmosphere, good spot and helpful staff. They have a good breakfast and 3 free dinners a week (you are encouraged to help cook). Was in quite a good spot, close to Little Italy, Chinatown and the water. It's quite a big hostel, but still friendly and easy to meet people if you're traveling on your own. An old building, but still secure and clean.
Amazing atmospheric common room in an ex ballroom, with high ceilings and a piano where everyone eats. Well equipped kitchen, helpful staff, pool table, great location. We got a room in a separate building that was like having a whole house to ourselves and a couple of other people. We had an incredible view of the skyline and harbour from our window and balcony. And free dinner twice a week!

Good locations and price! San Fran is expensive, so the hostel was a great option.
We are 9 days into our road trip stayed in the penthouse in the standard in LA and can honestly say this place gave us more for our money.

I wasn't expecting luxury, so was very pleased with the state of the property. Very well organised, friendly staff , clean and tidy. The breakfast was good (toast + oatmeal + fruit + coffee) and there was plenty to do with organised activities, a movie room, lounge, books etc.
The setting is wonderful, peaceful yet close to many attractions. The staff are very helpful but not fully informed of local events, for example they were unaware of the Carnival procession in Mission yesterday even though this is an annual event. Several guests said they would have gone had they been told of it. The facilities are good, a dollar for laundry is excellent value. The cafe serves good basic food or there is a huge kitchen if you want to cook. The bunk beds are comfortable but the ladder to the top bunk requires you to have long legs and to be sober.

Good size rooms and comfortable beds. Clean rooms and bathrooms. Cool cafe/bar downstairs.
Everyone was very friendly. It was close to many great food places, Civic Center, Union Square, and public transportation. Breakfast was a great value! It was clean and felt very comfortable to stay in. I would stay here again if I needed to.

Great location and price. The bathrooms and showers are pretty clean and odor-free. The whole place is, for the most part, clean.
Lovely beds, super luxurious in comparison to other hostels I've been in. Hostel/hotel is defo the right description.

Good place to get a nights rest. Plan on staying closer to the city. Staff was nice enough. Very inexpensive. Felt Safe. No problems with cleanliness.

Really clean. There was always cleaners either hoovering or going in and doing the bathrooms. Really don't understand peoples awful reviews of this place, I was expecting a full on dive and got a pleasant surprise For the price you're paying it's pretty decent. It's not in the Tenderloin as a lot of people make out it's situated between Bush and Sutter which has a few nice bars/cafés and within walking distance to most bus lines/Union Square. I never had a problem with the safety aspect being a solo female there was never any creeps lurking around outside which couldn't be said for other SF hostels which had higher ratings than the Amsterdam. I stayed in a four bed dorm (all bunks had ladders) and were pretty comfortable. Also our bathroom had a bath - a rarity in hostels which I was more than made up with after hiking the national parks of California for three weeks. It's not a party hostel like so many others in SF so if you're looking for that then you'd be better of going elsewhere. But for a decent sleep and just relaxing around the hostel I didn't have too many complaints.
We stayed here for 3 nights and would have gladly stayed an extra night or two...unfortunately the hostel was already booked out. What I loved most was the central location (short walk to market street etc.), the friendly staff and the size of our 4-mixed-dorm with spacious private bathroom (room 102 on the bottow floor). I also really appreciated the built in hair-dryers, the huge mirrow in the bathroom and the dorm. The hostel also provided fresh sheets and towels.
