Liked: Interesting experience! The hostel is basically a house with lots of the people actually staying there permanently. Not the best hostel to go to if you want to meet other travellers but fine if otherwise. Great location, walking distance from centre.

Disliked: We arrived late and it took a long time to find someone to check in as the reception is manned 24 hours a day. Bit confusing to have to find the back door and call the reception on an old pay phone.

Liked: Hostel is within walking distance of downtown area, about a twenty minute walk. The twin room we had was good vaue for money. The kitchen was well equipped. The area the hostel is located in is quiet and leafy. We enjoyed Salt Lake City, it surprised us as a modern, quiet and clean city. We were able to take a day trip to the snow using suburban public transport. Hostel is pretty clean and homey.

Disliked: The hostel can check you in 24 hours, but we arrived on the night train at around 4am, and there is a sign on the office door advising to ring the manager after hours for check-in but the notice isn't visible where we were waiting on the front step, we had to wait a while, and were eventually let in by a resident who was going off to work to read the notice. A slight half-way house vibe.

Liked: Location to downtown and grocery store is great. Cleaning staff is awesome.

Disliked: A/C if working doesn't cool the rooms and they offer no fans for the lack of A/C or when it isn't working. Would like ceiling in bathroom fixed instead of looking at could be mold. There are a lot of long term mental illness people that stay there.

Liked: The avenues hostel is in a great location, 10 minutes walk from Temple Square. They offer a great $7 shuttle service from the greyhound station. The rooms are spacious and good value for money. There are plenty of computers to use, good wifi and good free breakfast.

Disliked: Not a massive fan of the bathroom. It is the same room for the toilets and showers, opposite each other and the 'doors' are curtains. Not ideal but can't complain for the price.

Liked: Better than the Radisson downtown! I’ve stayed at about 50 hostels in the US and abroad and this was one of the best. My friend and I stayed two nights in a private room, a roomy tall ceiled room with big old comfy iron bed windows overlooking a quiet street lined with huge trees. Free parking is available. This area remands me of a pleasant neighborhood in San Francisco, and Avenue Hostel has got to be one of the best values in Salt Lake City. It is in an old historic neighborhood about a dozen long blocks down from Temple Square. The neighborhood feels very safe and as we walked around we passed children playing on the sidewalk and grown-ups enjoying the evening in their small front yards. There is excellent bus service (and, closer in, rapid transit) and Rodney at the main desk was very helpful and accurate about that. Also there is a great grocery several blocks up the street - the grade is a little steep going up, but the good news is that coming back carrying your groceries you are coming downhill – just watch for the trip-able upheaves in the old sidewalk. Tip: buses and rapid transit are free in the downtown/Temple area, so you just need minimal bus fare or walking time to get to the free zone. The hostel has a full selection of bus route timetables.

Liked: Great location - a few blocks from the CBD but located in such a nice suburban area. Beautiful houses all around it, it was so nice to stay in an area like that. Hostel was generally clean and staff were mostly helpful and friendly.

Disliked: My main problem was the $10 charge to leave my bags there for the day that I checked out. I'd checked out at 10 and was coming back at 5. I haven't seen any other hostel charge that much and it wasn't even like my bag was going into a secure storage area, it was just left at the front of the reception desk where anyone could take it if they wanted. I would have given the Avenues an almost perfect review if it wasn't for that. When you're traveling for a while something like that $10 makes the difference between if you have lunch or not that day! Aside from that, lockers in the room would have been nice.

Liked: Feels like staying at your grandparents place, beautiful neighbourhood and two big kitchen areas with a lot of utilities to cook your own food, the shopping market 4 blocks away offers everything you can get on the world. Perfect to plan your trip to Yellowstone Nationalpark and chill out!

Disliked: Altough its a beautiful place, the rest and bathrooms are really poor and old, but this is acceptable for that price!

Liked: satellite tv in room

Disliked: No mention on the page or e-mail from the hostel that the reception isn't staffed between 10:30pm and 7am and you have to ring a number to get someone to check you in. Really convenient for people travelling without a phone. No mention of the ridiculously exorbitant and strangely applied ($1/night) credit card service charge. Staff are useless and outright rude at times to guests.
