About HI - Portland Hawthorne Hostel
Our hostel is located in one of Portland's most popular destination districts, the Hawthorne District. Close in, bohemian, & fun, Hawthorne Blvd is known for its quaint eateries, coffeehouses, pubs, unique shops, and the famous Bagdad Brewpub & Theatre. And its a quick trip by bus to City attractions such as Powell's Books, Old Town, Weekend Market, Washington Park, Willamette River Promenade, etc. It's the perfect blend of urban pulse and friendly attitude.
The hostel atmosphere is charming (built in 1909), clean, & safe. We have a spacious kitchen and common rooms, comfortable beds & attractive bathrooms. Outside are the front decks & side yard for relaxing and people watching.
FREE breakfast of pancakes, coffee or tea, and bagels (when available.) No lockout or curfew, & late arrivals available with prior arrangement. High-speed internet kiosk available, as well as free wireless and cabled systems for laptops. Free local phone, free linens and towels, free parking. Discount bicycle rentals on-site; Lockers and laundry machines are available, too. Call directly for private room availability.
The Hawthorne Hostel started life as a house built in 1909. Inside, you'll find the walls are painted all different colours, there’s a mosaic on the fireplace in the dining room, and it's all topped off with an eco-roof, a roof covered in soil and plants to make the building more sustainable, on the second floor. Outside you'll find a unique rainwater harvesting system that collects rain to be used to flush our toilets!
All of our rooms are named after places or features found around Portland. Our community meeting room, Mt. Tabor Room, was built with doors and windows that were destined for the scrap heap. The Mt. Tabor Room walls are insulated with fill created from shredded used blue jeans!
Please Note: We do not accept bookings of 5 or more people between the dates of May 1st to Oct 1st. We retain the right to cancel your booking should a group larger than 5 people book
The Hawthorne Hostel is located on Hawthorne Boulevard in the Sunnyside neighborhood, in the heart of Southeast Portland. Lonely Planet calls Hawthorne one of Portland's most youthful and dynamic neighborhoods, and with good reason. In less than ten minutes you can walk to dozens of coffeehouses, pubs, thrift stores, alternative and hippie boutique stores, ethnic and vegetarian restaurants and cafes, organic grocery stores, plus several discount movie houses, a Zen meditation center, and lots of eccentric attractions. We're also only a 15-minute bus ride from downtown Portland.
