Liked: Location

Disliked: We stayed for more than a week but there was no cleaning what so ever during our stay. Bins were overflowing, sheets were not changed, towels neither. Other thing what unpleasantly surprised me was fact, that this is not usual hostel, main office is just tiny apartment with one guy, who is mostly somewhere else.

Disliked: When we arrived we were directed to 3 different buildings which were all empty. We rang the hostel and the gentleman told us he would meet us at 1.30pm. At 1.30pm we rang back and he told us he would meet us at 3pm. At 3pm he explained the hostel was overbooked and directed us to a hotel. The hotel did not exist and he blocked our number. We did not receive our deposit back and had to stay in 3 different hostels for 6 days.

Disliked: The hostel manager was unreachable by phone on the night we were arriving late, and only after one hour i finally got him on the line. We were sent to his home address to pick up the keys to the apartment in Hell's Kitchen (~15 min walking distance to Times Square) where we were going to spend our time. The apartment itself looked like it wasnt really finished yet, lots of building materials still scattered around the apartment. Beds were clean though. Then, after 4 nights the manager told us to move to another apartment in East Village because he had a large group coming in, so we had to pack our suitcases once more and cross the whole of Manhattan to another apartment, which didnt get cleaned until after 10pm that night. All in all, I wouldnt recommend this 'hostel' as its just too much buck and a lot of hassle (unreachable staff, moving around manhattan, having to contact the manager in order to get our beds cleaned, fix Wi-Fi, etc.).

Liked: Great location

Disliked: I selpt on dirty sheets the whole stay, despite the manager promising to get me fresh ones. The appartment was dirty when I arrived, hair in shower, dirty toilet and sink, wet towels on floor, and it was not cleaned once durig my 5 night stay. The room was advertised as having a kitchen, but the stove, oven and sink were out of order. The manager is incompatent, and overbooks constantly. When i asked for a reasonable discount of 35% for the above reasons he refused. He also did not meet me when we arranged to meet to fix up payment, and he did not appologise.

Liked: The location.... we were a 5-10 minute walk from Times Square. However, this is luck of the draw depending on which of their properties you are staying in... some of them (such as the one we were sent to first) are further away and in much dodgier looking areas.

Disliked: I'm not fussy, especially when it comes to staying in hostels, but without a doubt this was the worst hostel experience I've ever had.... and yet it was probably the most expensive hostel I've ever stayed in!! There were no self-catering facilities and so we had to spend even more money eating out. The place was VERY dirty.... when we checked in we were told that a cleaner came every day, but in the 8 days we were there she came maybe three times and emptied the bins - and that was it. The bathroom was not cleaned once and was absolutely filthy, and the sheets were dirty (I slept on top of the comforter the entire time as my sheets were covered in hairs, dirt and even some specks of blood. Truly truly gross). We also ran out of toilet paper and had e-mail them before we finally got more, several days later. The manager was incredibly lazy - for example, whilst we were staying there two other girls arrived. There was only one bed left which had no sheets on, so when the manager brought them to the room he told them he would come back later with an extra fold-out bed (which would surely have broken some fire safety laws as there was barely spare room enough to move!) and clean sheets. It got to 11:30pm and he hadn't brought them... and when they rang him to find out where he was, he said he was tired so they would have to do without. They ended up sharing the one sheetless bed and leaving the next day. Everyone in our room was nice, but there was no common-area of any sort so it made it very hard to sit and talk to people. None of the male staff knock before entering the female dorm.... and as the door leads straight into the bedroom this happened a few times whilst girls were getting changed! Also, when we first arrived at the hostel we went to the address that we had been given in our confirmation e-mail... and couldn't get in. We rang the hostel to ask them to let us in, and told them the address of where we were. We spoke to the manager, who just said the door must not be working... I have no idea why it didn't occur to him to tell us that the head office was actually at a different address, 8 blocks away. We stood there for about 45 minutes until a cleaner told us where to go to check in... and after walking there we were then taken to the place we were actually staying, yet another completely different place! There was another guy there having the exact same problem, so it wasn't just a one-off accident. Useless!

Liked: The location was very good, It's really close to time square, but note that this hostel has many different locations accross manhattan, so you could end up somewhere else then you would expect

Disliked: It was not clean and I had to move to another location, while they did not notify me at my arrival. It is also very expensive for what you get and there is no common room to meet other travelers.

Liked: The location is brilliant. Only 10 minute walk to Times Square and 5 minute walk to the subway. Just far enough to be out of the busiest area but close enough that you can be there in minutes. The 6-bed dorm room was nice and seemed mostly clean and comfortable. The beds were comfortable and there is a kitchen and bathroom which is good.

Disliked: The building I stayed in was not actually at the address listed which an be problematic. Then I had to carry my bags that I had been walking around up 5 flights of stairs as there is no elevator. The hallways are very narrow and there is no common room or place to meet people in other rooms. The bathroom looks old and a bit dirty. The air conditioner is loud and sounds slightly broken, albeit gets the job done. I was told the room would be full throughout the week but it only had 2-3 other people at most. This was good for the space but made it hard to meet people.

Liked: The apartment is clean, with new-looking floors and fresh wall paint, the beds are new and comfortable (as comfortable as bunk beds can be), and the linens are clean and the AC unit works great. The wireless needs fiddling with and the router needs resetting every once in a while but it is pretty fast and reliable. The roof has a wonderful view of the city at night (just watch out for roaches), and the apartment is in a very quiet area that's still close enough to walk to Times Square. It was very secure, my stuff wasn't interfered with or anything during my whole 7 nights' stay. There was only one night we had a roach because someone left the window open. The fridge and stove are there for our use, but take your own cutlery and dishes/bowls.The owner was a little reserved but not unhelpful. He even accepted a package for me at the head office.

Disliked: I had to walk around for about 15 blocks before i finally found the office. Make sure you have the number and CALL FOR DIRECTIONS. Don't attempt to find it until you speak to someone from the hostel, tell them you're coming and get exact directions. Also, the apartment I stayed in was up four steep flights of stairs, which was murderous with suitcases or after walking around the city all day. One of the residents of the building also cursed me for staying there, telling me to "get the f*** out because they didn't want us hostellers there" and that I should "go back back to wherever the hell" I came from. Also the lock in the front door reallyneeds changing, it sticks and you have have to jiggle the key, and it can take quite a few minutes to turn right.

Liked: I liked that it was our 'own' apartment, lots of nice restaurants.

Disliked: The location wasn't ideal, couldn't really walk around to see much, had to catch the subway everywhere, which isn't terrible but not the most convenient when you can walk around from a lot of other properties. the staff left you to your own devices, and the check-in process was terrible

Disliked: I stayed for 10 nights - the room was only cleaned the day after my arrival and the day before my departure. The towel was only changed on the day before my departure. I ordered and paid for a 4-bed female dorm, but we were up to 5 women staying there.

Liked: This Hostel is by far the cleanest hostel I have ever stayed in! Also, the security is pretty good, so you can leave your bags there during the day and be sure that they're safe. The location is fantastic! Its right in the middle of the action. Its just down the road from a subway station, there are multiple cafes nearby and a 99c Pizza place just on the corner!

Disliked: When I stayed, there was no common room or an area where everyone could hang out. However, Im sure if your in a dorm room, it would be easier to meet others!

Liked: The staff didn't mind me going in and leaving at all hours of the day and late night/morning. They did help me with my keys when I had trouble with them for the first 2 days, when I couldn't use the keys to open the doors they would come and help me.

Disliked: It was very cramped and the shower in the dorm didn't always work properly. One day is was broken the entire day, so we had to use the shower downstairs, and the day after there were clogging problems. I dislike the fact that it's not very welcoming and they don't really encourage a friendly atmosphere among guest and roommates.
