Liked: Beautiful old building - which can be a bit creepy at night! But it is located on a street with many other beautiful buildings and it is easy to walk to Canal Street from the hostel. The towels are small and thin but just ask for a new one if you need it. Our door was difficult to lock but it worked. We felt safe there and the staff was very nice

Liked: It needs to be clear this is not a hostel per se - it's a guesthouse with no maximum stay so you will find all sorts of people here, including those that have lived here for years because it is cheap. People tend to keep themselves to themselves and are friendly though. Dorm facilities are very very basic - not very clean - pretty grotty, i killed a lot of bugs on my stay, matresses thinner than a slice of cheese (I felt all 4 slats in the bunk), same applies to pillow situation, there is no breakfast included and no facilites for storing food so you can either eat out or at the restaurant inhouse. Air con in room a lifesaver. No computer but there is wifi (which can be accessed from main building/ garden but not in the dorms). No lockers either. You'll have to ask the staff about anything you would like to know, there is no introduction, but I found them to be nice and chilled. You'll need to take public transport to get to the French Quarter and I'd recommend taxis back if you are coming back late at night. The building has a lot of history and character, and I liked sitting in the garden. I would consider coming again but would definately book a room rather than sleep in the dorms.

Liked: There's much to like about the hotel - I stayed there last year and came back. I like the building itself, the wrap-around balconies, the high ceilings and tall windows. AC and ceiling fans work. There is a court yard with trees and a nice big pool, and they take care of it. Last year, they had a big roach problem, which was much improved this year. We did have an invasion of flying termites, but this did not seem to concern the management. They said that termites only swarm 3 days out of the year. Reservations are a gamble, since the staff say they cannot reserva a particular room number, and there are some rooms much more desirable than others. Also, we noted that prices for same dates fluctuate among individuals. I think the system would be much improved if the website could add room numbers, descriptions, maybe even pictures and allow the visitor to select and reserve a room by number.The prices given on the website do not include approx. 12% tax and a $2 per day for 'other', maybe housekeeping? Upon arrival, our rooms were fairly clean, the sheets and towels as well. But there was no housekeeping - cleaning, trash pick up or fresh towels for the entire week to justify that charge. Besides, I would rather tip directly for such services if/when received.Location is good - close to restaurants and shops on Magazine, a few blocks from St. Charles and within walking distance to the Quarter. The street behind the hotel has a park like median and is great for walking or biking.

Liked: The building is absolutely gorgeous! It has so much character and history. There is also a cafe downstairs which has good meals for a good price. The staff were really friendly and the trolley is a quick walk away! We really enjoyed our stay!

Liked: The staff was really helpful, and the guys at the cafe are really friendly.The advertise wi-fi but there is no connection in the rooms, only in the lounge.I stayed in a private room, but it wasn't very clean, neither the toilets.The neighbourhood is pretty safe, but you have to either walk into town (20-30 mins), wait for the irregular buses, or at night get a cab.If you can only afford this cheap a room, then go for it, but be prepared for what comes with it.

Liked: This hostel is steeped in history being built over one hundred & forty five years ago - originally as an orphanage. I was surprised to discover that Lee Harvey Oswald stayed at the orphanage as a very young baby for a short time. The man at the front desk, Lance, was very friendly, helpful & was keen to inform guests of the hostel`s history. His assistant, Natasha, was also very friendly and helpful. I would recommend this hostel to anyone.

Liked: Do yourself a favour and stay at St. Vincent's Guesthouse. It's a real New Orleans kind of place. As soon you walk into the reception you feel welcome and at home. The staff is very very friendly and allways good for all sorts of tips on where to go and what to do. They know where to get the best crawfish, where to hit the music scene or witch tours are worth going on.The guesthouse is on Magazine Street in the Garden District which has a very lokal atmosphere. Just across the street there's a great little coffee shop, a block down (at Surrey's) you'll get the best breakfast in town and if you walk a couple of blocks uptown there's a lot of neat little restaurants and cafes. If you don't feel like walking you can catch the street car to The French Quarter - it'll take you there in 10 min.A really cool thing about St. Vincent's is that you can also just stay there. Sit in the garden or hang out in the reception cracking jokes with the staff - soon you'll want to take each and everyone of them with you on your further travels.Tine and Lone from Denmark.
