Liked: Stayed at Venice Beach hostel as a couple in February 2011. We picked this room for the location and the fact they offered a free airport pickup (they don't offer this on return but you can walk to the bus stop and take the bus straight there for $1)! The location is great and the owner guy that picked us up from the airport was very helpful. When you book you need to email them separately for the toll-free phone number for the airport pick up. The number you get on your email confirmation is not toll free! The pick up was great though. We called from the airport when we arrived and within 30 minutes we were picked up. We booked a tour through the hostel (the A1 city tour) for $50 per person which was a discount price and a great tour to do (and they pick you up just across the road from the hostel). If you're only here for a couple of nights to do the sightseeing then this place is ok.

Disliked: Having just come from backpacking around SE Asia we were expecting something fairly decent for the price (and western standards compared to SE Asia). We stayed in a private double with shared bathroom for $25 per person per night. There are actually 2 different buildings for this hostel and we stayed at the smaller one. The room was ok but could have been better. The beds are pretty awful and there was an old stained carpet which they should just get rid of. It was also really cold - no heating of any sort and for some reason they constantly had the doors/ windows open. We were only here for 2 nights but it was cold and raining (not normal for LA at this time of year). The also don't clean every day - the shared bathroom we used was a bit dirty and not cleaned at all whilst we were there.

Liked: This hostel is fabulous. It is in a great location, close to all of the sights of venice beach and santa monica and close to transportation links. The staff are friendly and helpful and always there to offer advice and tips as well as details of the lesser known attractions in the area. The atmosphere is great, friendly and relaxed. This is definately the place you want to stay if you are travelling alone or wanting to spend time with other travellers. I have stayed here on a number of occassions and have always had a great time and met some great people too! I would highly recommend this hostel to anyone looking for a fun, safe and friendly place to stay in the Venice area.

Liked: really close to venice beach! easy access to buses.

Disliked: no locks on the fornt doors or rooms was aittle worrying buthtey did say they always had someone on the door. people were able to smoke inside and i am not a smoker

Disliked: no Internet, when it said it had Internet was not on the beach where I thought it was and poor staffing .. Treated like they don't have time for you...

Liked: The homely feel

Disliked: -No airport shuttle occurred -States 8 person dorm, had 13 ppl -2 toilets & Showers for 35 + ppl -no spirits, only beer -Paid $35 each to sleep on a mattress on the floor with no space...should have been offered a lower price for not having a bed or any room in our little loft -staff are nice, hostel is just well ovepriced for what is offeredin comparison to other hostels. $20 max per night

Liked: - the atmosphere -like a house sharing with some friends - a different hostel not so typical. - you can rent a bike very cheap

Disliked: cant close the shower. so you give up all your privacy no hostel acitivities

Liked: Great for the beach, local bars etc. Laid back like the area itself.

Disliked: We were packed off to an annex which was far less impressive than the main hostel. It was far more shoddy and with none of the amenities the advertised hostel had. The rooms were uncomfortable hot and one of use got bitten for sleeping there.

Disliked: it'wasn't clean and rooms was so small for 8 people also i had to share bathroom with 20 more people they only have 2 bathroom upstairs and down stairs and they have almost 40 bed in 4 rooms

Liked: The owner was really nice and helpful but he did lie about trips.as when we went to book with the other staff he told us it was a lie. There is a nice and social tv area.

Disliked: Sleeping on mattresses on the floor about an inch away from other ppl.no lock on any door. Kinda smelly.

Liked: There is honestly not a lot to like about this property, apart from them offering $1 beers in the vending machine.

Disliked: No locks on the bathroom doors. They claim they have no curfew, however one night a few of us were drinking no later than 1am at which point we were told of for disturbing the peace. The next day we thought nothing of it and went on with our day to the beach. It was only on our return from the beach at 5.30pm we were told our behaviour from the night before was unacceptable, no second chances were given and myself and 3 others; one of which who was in bed at half ten the night before were given 30 minutes to find another location to stay and then asked to leave. We were not allowed to discuss this situation with management, or even explain or apologise for our actions from the night before, we were merely thrown out on the street.

Liked: The rooms were big and comfortable. The bathrooms were clean and nice. The breakfast was good, because there was a big variety of food.

Disliked: It was allowed to smoke in the kitchen and in the lounge. Also you have to walk 20 minutes to the beach.

Liked: Great people, nice old house. Not exactly a hotel experience, but certainly value for money.

Disliked: Smoking allowed downstairs results in the whole place smelling. Furniture all a bit aged, minimal linen resulting in a pretty uncomfortable and cold night.

Disliked: the hostel and hostel room were old. furniture were in bad condition. kitchen was gross.

Liked: Extremely charming hostel. One of those hostels where you don't wanna leave the house, because the people in there are so funny. A lot of weird but lovely people just hangin out all day.

Disliked: Not very clean, especially the kitchen. But no ''pets'' and you can live with it, if you're not a sissy.
