Liked: This was a GREAT hostel to stay at. Great downtown location and also close to the Alaska Railroad station hence making it the perfect place to explore Alaska. The whole week and a bit that I was there I always felt safe and secure and the staff were extremely helpful.The only way that i could see the hostel being better was if it had a bar, so travelers could meet and share their travel stories of the day, but VERY few hostels in the US seen to have bars. But the hostel staff were great for telling which bars were good, and we did bump into each other and share a few beers.95% a PERFECT HOSTEL!!

Liked: Very nice, close to downtown, lockers in each room and the doors have card key. Very safe. They provide spotless bed liners and clean (most of the time, at least) bathrooms. The lounge area is big and promote conversation among the guests. I liked very much, and stay there twice already. :-)

Liked: Great key card security at front door and every guest room. The hostel has been built from scratch by gutting and remodeling a solid 50-year old building. Everything is new. Location is great, close to the Sheraton Hotel, where I was attending a conference. The best thing about the hostel is the friendly and helpful staff. Dan, the manage, ris a gregarious Irishman who has started hostels in Dublin and elsewhere. The hostel was not apparently not completed when it opened in May, 2007. One staff member is still working on finish carpentry, which is nearly completed. One finished sall painting is excellent. Guests are encouraged to sketch with chalk on some unfinished walls, which I am sure will have been completed as finished paintings the next time I visit. Alaska Backpackers has authentic atmosphere and spirit that I really enjoyed.

Liked: We were re-routed to a nearby hotel, which was clean and convenient, although frequented by drunks. The hostel is still awaiting approval for their electric service as I understand. But the staff was helpful and kind.
