Liked: The staff are outstanding. When we (a small family with lots of baggage) arrived late at night, the taxi couldn't reach the hostel because of roadworks. Gaye, the on-duty staff that night, came out to meet and help us reach the hostel on foot - and her friendly warmth continued throughout our stay. The location of the hostel very close to the Galata Tower is great, too. There's a good mom-owned restaurant (Galata Kitchen) a minute away, turn left out of the hostel, walk to the end of the street, and it's immediately across the perpendicular road. We visited in midwinter, and the heat in our room (from the heat-exchange a/c unit) was fine. It's also just a 20-minute walk (along Istiqlal, then turn left - see the hostel's map) to reach the Buyuk Hammam (http://www.buyukhamam.net), for locals, founded in 1533. Price for men TL34.50 with massage, for women (better service and products, evidently) TL50 for both my wife and daughter.

Disliked: Well, "dislike" might be a little too strong, but there are several areas that could be improved. For the price, towels ought to be provided. Leftover bread was recycled for breakfast the following day. Artificial creamer was offered instead of milk (for coffee/tea). The curtain rod in our room had come out of the wall before our stay, and had not been repaired. And given the cold, it would have been nice to have had a way to stop the cold air penetrating the room from underneath the door (as it was, because of the curtain situation, we used the "spare" curtain for this). Finally, having more than just one electrical outlet in the room would be great. Finally, don't expect any cats at Sumo Cat hostel - the name might be a little misleading....

Liked: The location and most of all the staff are very nice.

Disliked: The hostel doesn't suffer from noise from the streets, as it is tucked away into a small alley, but we stayed in the room next to the reception and those walls are pretty thin.. But with some consideration, it was okay.

Liked: It's off the beaten path, but only a short walk to both Galata Bridge (and therefore tramway stops) and Taksim Square. Very convenient! The hostel also owns Tag, a nearby bar that was a great time on New Years and we got discounted drinks for staying here!

Disliked: It's difficult to find at first, but not after the first time. You have to take a quick couple of turns to find Ali Hoca but once you're there, it's easy to spot on the right. It's located at the top of a steep hill, but it's not terribly tall!

Liked: Nothing

Disliked: This place is the worst in my travel life. Everything is not enough. I arrived there at 8:00PM. But the bed which I would use was not prepared. It was very unpleasant. Besides, location is not that good. This hostel is in a narrow and dark street. If you will stay there, you could be tired for finding the location. Cleanness???? Definitely BAD. I still don't like Istanbul the city itself, because of this hostel.

Liked: Central in Istanbul and easy to get to places once you get oriented. It is hard to find as the streets are a maze, but was able to get there by asking some store clerks in the area to point the way.

Disliked: Bathroom is tiny and could be cleaner. Floors & bunks squeak a lot.

Liked: A nice and cozy hostel in a really interesting neighborhood of Istanbul with many shops and restaurants (see the antique tram at the top of the hill). The price is good.

Disliked: When arriving after dark, the hostel can be really hard to find. This is how to: When arriving with the tram at Karakoy, focus on the tower on the hill ahead - you need to get up there. Take the pedestrian subway to get to the left side of the street and then walk straight ahead. Yüksem Kaldrim is a quite steep path that leads up that hill (currently one big construction area). After you have climbed a bit and you can spot the tower on your left, turn right and left again into Tatar Beyi. Opposite a derelict building the alley starts that will lead you to the hostel. Follow the signs for NOS Gym, which is right opposite the hostel; you can also spot a dark red painted cat head below the sign for the gym. Good luck!
