Pension Gimmelwald is an old wooden Swiss mountain Inn, located in Gimmelwald, in the heart of the swiss alps.

A farmhouse 100 years ago, it is now a cozy family style inn that takes pride in offering old fashioned hospitality. The bar and restaurant area is full of memorabilia and antiques from the farming village. There is also a log fire and traditional bar.

We welcome people from all over the world to a mountain retreat far from the madding crowd. The pension stands at 4500ft (1350m) and can only be reached from the valley by cable car (we are just 2 minutes from the station). The building is unashamedly old fashioned, the furniture is all period to the inn and there are no TVs. Staying here you leave the modern world behind and return to a traditional farming community where many tasks are still done by hand. The village is car free and most produce is organic. For supper we encourage people to sit around one big table and join in the conversation. The inn is also used by the local community.

Accommodation Information

We have both double and triple bed rooms. The bedrooms are comfortable and warm with wood panelling, rooms have a wash basin. Showers and toilettes are on the corridor.

Location Information

Gimmelwald is now rather famous, in a quiet way, as a traditional swiss mountain village farming community based around the production of cheese and meat. Cows, sheep and goats graze the steep pastures.

The village sits on a sunny ledge more than 1500 feet above the Lauterbrunnen valley and is surrounded by some of the highest peaks in the Alps. The views really are breathtaking.

The area is famous for both skiing and hiking, both of which can start directly from the front door of the pension. During the summer, families work together to cut and turn the hay by hand before hauling and storing it in wooden barns.
