Liked: Reasonable cheap style hotel. Very basic but has a safe in the room and plenty of hot water. It is bang in the middle of the "red light district" so if you don't like seeing working girls on the street in the evening you may be uncomfortable here.

Liked: Even though the hostel s located in the city centre - near to all touristic attractions, bars and restaurants, it is very calm. The rooms are very clean and the towels were changed every day! The staff is also kind and helpful - it is the best hostel I have ever stayed in Spain.

Liked: The only low rating I gave this hostel is for meeting new people - but that isnt what we wanted! This is the PERFECT hostel to go to if you've already got mates to go with and just want comfy beds, safe secure rooms and heklpful staff - We didnt want a place full of kids, and this hostel was incredibly friendly. Tip the staff because theyre so polite and welcoming and helpful! Even when me and my mates were making too much noise at 12am they very politely asked us to keep it down, which we did.The location is pretty much bang in the middle of Madrid, with a metro stop minutes away (but you might as well walk) and lots of shops and cafe's about. The only downside to this place is the shower which was v nice and powerful, but secured by a flimsy little curtain thing so your bathroom gets flooded daily if you're staying with over-enthusiastic flatmates who flail about in the shower! Other than that - perfect.

Liked: It was fun staying at the Hostal San Martin in the heart of Madrid. Easy to find and reach from the airport., very friendly staff (although English capacity is limited), quiet and safe accomodation. Two constructive things: - the bedlinen, towels and the furniture should be replaced, you can see that they all want to be put out of their misery ;-) AND- the street itself (Calle Concepcion Arenal), together with Grand Via, is also the working / walking area of those 'special' ladies, well, some of them were gentlemen at lesat at some time in the past

Liked: It's clean and great location (on a 5minute walk to Sol!) and close to multiple metro stations (although the city is quit 'walkeble'. Do not expect good looking or well furnished rooms. Never the less we had great journey and its good value

Liked: The staff members were EXTREMELY helpful (but I am a Spanish major). It may be more difficult for those who speak little Spanish but I´m sure you wouldn´t have a big problem. Approximately 20minutes walk to Parque del Buen Retiro y el Museo del Prado. The store Corte Ingles is very close to the hostal and it is a great place to buy things to eat.. More about the actual hostal... the staff clean the bathrooms every day and supply free towels and linens. My parents and I were taking the train from Madrid to Barcelona at 23¨hours, but the Hostal staff gladly allowed us to keep our luggage so we could still sight see before we left. The building has a lot of character (in a good way). I would highly recommend staying here. Also, please note**there is an elevator but it is relatively small, but still effective. I am definitely coming back soon :)

Liked: Staff were great. They were very accommodating , considering it was during the period of the volcano eruption in Iceland and things were chaotic with people extending and cancelling bookings.

Liked: Free wi-fi throughout the Hostel, and we were basically in the city centre (just off a side street off Gran Via) which was great and easy to get around - with the metro just a few metres away. The owners were very nice and the room was cleaned everyday.

Liked: Das Hostel ist SUPER! Auch wenn einer am Empfang nicht englisch kann versucht er es mit Hand und Fuß. Das Zimmer war sehr sauber und von der Einrichtung her super OK. Für 2 Sterne erwartet man schliesslich auch nicht viel. Man kann problemlos jederzeit einchecken (hierfür ggf. spanisch drauf haben um zu sagen, wer man ist und ein Zimmer reserviert hat) und auch nach Verlängerung fragen. Jeden Tag werden die Betten gemacht und es gibt frische Handtücher, was ich nicht erwartet hätte.Ich werde auf jeden Fall bei meinem nächsten Aufenthalt in Madrid da wohnen und würde auch "übernachtungsemfpndliche" Menschen da mit hinnehmen!
