Liked: The location of the guest house was good and the fact that there is no curfew was an excellent thing since I liked to stay out with friends until late. The staff was friendly and helpful, and the facilities were clean and functioning. Also the free internet connection provided by the guest house was excellent, and great value for all smart phone users.

Disliked: During my stay there were not many other guests, so if there would be more guests, I think that there could be some problems with the common shower rooms. Also I would have liked to have had an own trash can in the room so that I would not every time had to have walk between my room and the kitchen. Also the fact that you have to pay the price in cash was more or less unsatisfying.

Liked: Our stay was quite nice in this medium sized city near Seoul, less than 1hr's drive or bus/train ride away. The place was incredibly clean; the common area and kitchen were quite friendly to guests. Hwa Seong Guest House is surrounded by cultural attractions all within walking distance, no lack for thiings to do. The South Gate and Fortress were definitely worthwhile places to visit, and the sword play/cultural heritage show at one of the city centers was a must see. Seeing as this hostel is one of its only type in Suwon, it was definitely a wonderful place to stay. The owner was quite friendly and accomodating, answered all of our questions and went that extra-mile to make sure we were satisfied with our stay. - We are big fans of sashimi, so we tried the japanese restaurant downstairs and Mr. Choi made it a point to accompany us down to the first floor, bringing us free sample plates of house specialties, on top of that, when we looked at our bill they had included a rather decent discount. Our hwe (sashimi) was a treat, quite fresh and the portion was rather large for the price. What a nice end to our visit in Korea, when we got to the airport, thanks to Mr. Choi the last leg of our trip was memorable and hassle-free. I was content to return home after a good journey in the east.

Liked: The owner was very nice though his English was quite bad. He drove us to the airport limo on our last day when he saw that we wanted to take a metro with all our luggage. This guesthouse had a dryer for clothes (many guesthouses do not have this). The location is excellent as buses to everland (1-2 min), shops (2 min), Hwaseong Fortress (2 min) and eateries (1-2 min) were all within walking distance.

Disliked: There was only 1 shower facility shared by all males which means you may have to queue. However there were not many guests and most people returned at different times of the day so the waiting time was short.

Liked: 1st the good stuffs, Location is excellent for a pad to explore Suwon. Shower was pretty good. There was a area across the street which served fantastically delicious fried chicken at night. Must go!Other than that, there really is nothing to shout about. There's no linen provided, 2-bed Dorm was sparsely decorated with just the bunk beds in the room. Aircon was advertised as free, but the mains were controlled by the staff in charge (whom was in presumely his restuarant downstairs most of the time). Aircon was only switched on at night when we came back, and when we awoke at 8am the next day, the aircon was already switched off!!Not as good as reviewed. But nonetheless, a very cheap place to rest your feet for a night if you are just there as a quick stopover to visit Suwon.

Liked: The owner, Mr Choi could speak in English was particularly helpful. He helped me find the best deal for a whole day skiing at Vivaldi Park- made reservations for me via the phone.Mr Choi also sent us to the nearby public bath house/sauna the same night after we mentioned that we wanted to. We were very grateful because we couldn't speak Hanguel/Korean and the sauna staff couldn't understand English. And he was always teaching us korean words and provided us with English/Korean translation. We were even treated with free food since it was the Lunar New Year. He even gave us copies of the group picture that we took on that day.Other travellers there were friendly. There were many cheap eateries and shops nearby which were opened till late at night. The bus to go to Everland theme park was just a walking distance.Hwa seong fortress was about 5 mins walk away. And Suwon station was just 10 mins away.We had no toilet in our room but it felt like I had my own shared bathroom outside coz I never had to queue to use it.In a nutshell, I lurve the place and recommends it to other travellers. It's worth the money. i only paid 18SGD per night/person for a 2 person accomodation room =]

Shirley M. Jones

26 October 2009 Shirley M. would recommend this property

Liked: It is low season now, so not many people were staying at the Hwaseong this time, unlike in the summer . . . In the summertime, Hwaseong is always booked and every room is filled. Heads Up: Weekdays are the best because I had a two-bedroom all to myself like a private room without paying the private room price. This time staying at Hwaseong, surprisingly, I had the Hwaseong all to myself, despite staying on the weekend: I was chilling out watching TV, surfing the Internet, getting a cup of purified, filtered, hot or cold water from water dispensing unit, getting my food out of the 25 cubic feet refrigerator/freezer, heating my food in the microwave/stove, washing my own dishes, taking a hot shower, washing and drying my clothes upstairs . . . Having the Hwaseong to myself felt like I was chilling at my own home. FYI: I had a two-bedroom all to myself in August 2009, too! Each room has it's own door lock and key. The bedroom floor was heated when I checked into the Hwaseong and put my luggage inside the bedroom. Wow~simply awesome! Hwaseong Guesthouse is very clean, not noisy, tranquil, private (feels like your own home) place when you just want to chill out: 100% A+++++!Transportation around Suwon is very convenient, nice: Bus # 82-1=Takes you to Suwon Bus Station (E-Mart/Fashion Island Shopping Center), Seryu (no restaurants, no elevators or escalators-just a hellacious bunch of stairs climbing everywhere) Train Station and Suwon Train Station (disabled friendly station-escalators, elevators, restaurants, grocery stores, plethora of bathrooms) returning to Paldalmun and Hwaseong. Bus # 13 from Suwon Train Station walk 1/4 block on the LEFT side of the Mall sidewalk, past Suwon Tourist Center stops diagonally across the street from Comprador Bakery and Hwaseong Guest House-one bus stop AFTER Paldalmun Market (ring bus bell when bus veers right and passes the first stop light). ALL Seoul Metro Trains stop operating around 12:15 AM (80 minutes ride from Seoul TRain Station to Suwon, cost $1900 Won)! Get on the Metro Train at least by NO LATER than 10:45 PM in order to get to Suwon!Last F-A-S-T(I do mean very FAST) KORAIL TRAIN to Suwon from Seoul Train Station is 11:10 PM, cost 2500 Won (35-minutes ride)=worth every Won spent riding the Korail Train! The train has a bathroom on board and also, has a cafe where you can eat and drink coffee, beer, and eat good food-chow down, chill.AFTER 12 midnight-taxi cab drivers are not so receptive picking you up if you do NOT speak Hangugo! Please make sure you say-for a man, "Ani-yo-say-o, Sonsongneem. Hwa-se-ong Paldalmun (Pal dul moon), ju-say-o." For a woman taxi cab driver, "Aniyosayo, Sa-mo-neem. Hwaseong Paldalmun, jusayo." I had Mr. Kim's directions who wrote the dirctions in Hanguel to Hwaseong Guesthouse and all the taxi cab drivers said, "Moolat! Moet? Moora Gu? Moolat, moolat!" and drove away very quickly! So, the moral of the story-get to the trains before 10:45 PM! When in Seoul-stay at Bong House! Mr. Kim KNOWS Mr. Bong. Very cool people you must get to know . . . BOTH!
