Brian RussellThe Backpack is more of a boutique hostel than your average place and the prices reflect this - but I still would say it is good value. I stayed in a nice private ensuite room (Wild Dog) with coffee facilities and a much appreciated wall heater - Cape Town can be chilly in Sept. The tour desk is very convenient. Prudence at the front desk was very helpful and friendly and the bar and restaurant are a good place to hang out. It's also very convenient for the City tour double decker buses. |

Customer reviewVery friendly staff and a nice place to head to if just arrived in SA. Only complaint was the scale of the place - slightly like a supermarket of hostels... Great stay though. |

Customer reviewNice bedrooms and nice location. The only problem was the parking arrangement. There was parking, but a specific amount (R20 a night) needed to be paid to the guard to watch over the cars. The person watching cars was very forceful and specific about the amount we owed him, but he kept no record of what he had paid him every night. Paying R20 a night wasnt a problem, but the way he approached us constituted harrassment. Both guards acted suspiciously and their attitudes towards guests were dampener. When we did pay the guard he did not provide us with a receipt for the R20 to prove that we had paid him for that night. His attitude towards us was at times forceful and we felt we had to pay him just to stop us being harrassed. This was something we had to contend with everytime we came back from an outing. We had to keep on reminding him that we had paid him for the night before and it seemed like he could get aggressive if we felt we didnt pay our dues. Its a less than perfect setup because we felt continually harrassed. I would suggest that the hostel fix this problem by collecting the R20 a night "Parking guard fee" themselves and handle the money seperately with the guards, so that we dont have to be pay it to them direclty and be accosted by them every night. The hostel could handle that and inturn provide us with a receipt and a parking disc that would prove we paid. Formalising that payment would save alot of unnecessary iritation to the guests,. Other then the car guard harrassment, it was a friendly, well run hostel and i would come back again.. |
