Disliked: quite utilitarian - reminded me of the old youth hostels of the 1980's, rooms smell of dirty socks, metal bunk beds, nylon carpets, depressing strip lighting

Liked: Staff was pleasant and helpful with directions to local attractions.

Disliked: The hostel was shabby. The shower in one lavatory had the door falling off. Water pooled an inch deep on the floor in front of the shower. The bathroom floor had no floor covering--it was bare, unpainted wood. The beds smelled musty. No pillowcases were given, we had to use what was already on the pillow from the previous user. The sheet was actually a duvet cover, that we were expected to use as a bag in which to sleep, under the duvet, which did not have a fresh cover for each new resident. Only one burner worked on the two stoves. None of the others worked. The furniture in the day room was shabby and saggy and the room was too dimly lit for reading. The kitchen was not really very clean, just wiped up from day to day. There was a code for security for the front door, but there was no lock or pass card for use to the bedroom areas. So there was no real security in the sleeping rooms themselves. The lockers provided were not large enough to accomodate an average sized flight bag. Staff was pleasant and helpful, tho. We criticize this based on extensive hostel use in 3 continents. This hostel was in one of the worst conditions we have encountered. It does not appear that money is being put into reasonable maintenance!

Liked: Location was very convenient for my needs (near the University). Spacious lounge, though not enough electrical outlets. It's sufficiently warm, which is good when it's awfully chilly and damp outside. Proprietor is very friendly, though you've got to seek out the staff, they aren't just readily and obviously available.

Disliked: The kitchen isn't great--lousy washing-up fluid, insufficient clean dish towels, bad layout--but mostly what I think people are reacting to in negative reviews is what feels like a general shabbiness about the place. The beds aren't great--you'll feel every spring. The showers are absolutely tiny. Wryly hilarious as it is to listen to a largeish middle-aged man struggling to perform his ablutions in there, it's also kind of weird and creepy. A fair number of the guests are essentially staying here for transitional housing as they've just moved here and started work. Not a bad thing in and of itself, but it does mean that refrigerator space is pretty scant. No city map provided upon arrival. Maybe traveling in continental Europe spoiled me in that regard, but that's a super-helpful thing for new arrivals.

Liked: The place was clean, you could actually faintly smell the bleach on the linens! The staff was friendly, and the people staying were quite nice. The lounge was a fantastic size with comfortable leather sofas and a big dining table. If I were to stay in the West End again, I would go back.

Disliked: It was fine for one night, but the area can get loud during term time. I'm glad I brough earplugs. I don't think I could have been comfortable on that mattress for more than one night.

Liked: I thought Bunkum was so so charming. It's nestled on a quiet street in a 3 story apartment building. I stayed there the night before heading out for a 6 AM flight, so I was looking for somewhere that would be moderately quiet (which it was). The bathrooms are kept clean, the staff is very friendly and helpful, there is free wifi, and a full kitchen available for use (which I did not take advantage of, but some very delicious smells were coming from it around dinner time!)

Disliked: I suppose if you are looking for a party/social atmosphere, bunkum is not the place. Aside from the kitchen there is no main "hang out" room.

Liked: It was small and friendly with many long-term guests who all get to know each other.

Disliked: It was quite far from the centre (the walking directions they give you are a REALLY long walk, especially with a backpack.

Liked: Met a heap of great people here. Went to Loch Lomond one day with one of them. Also, one of the staff was going out on the Saturday and invited everyone along, which helped people to meet. Free wifi was also good.

Disliked: For those without their own laptop, there were no computers. Bathroom facilities looked like they needed a renovation, but beyond appearances were clean and good.

Liked: it's very intimate and homely, in a lovely old house, and the tea and coffee makes it suitable for having a chat.

Disliked: there was a bit more noise than i'm used to from the cars in the street, and the bed was right beside the window, making it draughty in bed. the sheet things are very restrictive

Liked: The hostel was on a quiet street, but extremely cloe to amenities, pubs, museums, parks, etc. The owner was always available when help was needed, and took time to chat with the various guests. The rooms and bathrooms were clean, the kitchen large, and the lounge comfortable. This hostel is not a place for partying per se, but it's a great place to meet people to go out with, and a relaxing place to be for a quiet night in.
