Liked: 10 mins walk from the castle..cool b/c you don't feel like your in a touristy part of town. nice, big kitchen. cool common room with plenty of spaces to eat, watch tv, or play pool. backyard patio good for smokers or those who like to eat outside. hot powerful showers

Disliked: bathrooms separate from the bedrooms. toilets on our floor were out of order the entire 4 days. no electrical outlets in the bedrooms (for safety reasons?) so we had to charge iPods at the front desk. no security lockers in the rooms, but you can leave things no problem at the front desk.

Liked: Really easy to get the bus into the city centre and to the airport, including night buses. Really clean

Disliked: Only common area was in the reception, which was closed at night, as was the kitchen. Not a great atmosphere, especially as a solo traveller. Showers were either boiling hot or cold.

Liked: Location not too bad.

Disliked: When you are looking for a hostel you ask only for a good bed and a good shower, and this hostel has none of it. Breakfast is horrible and costs 2 pounds. The lock of the ladys bathroom was broken.

Liked: Very nice and tidy and beds were comfortable

Disliked: The distance to the main city centre was a bit of a walk about 20min or more depending on where you needed to go, but theres buses and taxes stand directly opposite the hostel

Disliked: Lack of access to the lounge (and kitchen) after 11pm, reception closes at 11pm too. And the beds.... squeaky, squeaky, squeaky

Liked: Just cross-street to the Haymarket train station. About 20 min walk to the city centre. About 15 min bus (airline 100) from the airport. The staff is very friendly. The utilities are very convenient. Highly recommended.

Disliked: No power socket inside room. But there are a few in the lobby though.

Liked: it is just beside the haymarket train station. but be warned that it is not near to the center. Still it does have a lot of nice food around.

Disliked: the staff is not the most pleasant around.

Liked: I found The Hostel to be a wonderful place to stay, that isn't too far from the heart of Edinburgh. The staff is friendly and well informed, and they are always willing to help when you ask for it.

Disliked: The shower I used had two temperatures: Freezing cold and burning hot, but that may have been my ineptitude at understanding the system.

Liked: Free Wifi was excellent and the staff were amazingly helpful.

Disliked: As commented by others minor issues with things like non 24 hour reception and it being quite far from town. And plugs not in rooms.

Liked: Clean, cosy, accomodated our large group in one room. Good spot. Awesome Aussie front desk guy.

Disliked: Bathrooms leaked a bit from showers into toilets.

Liked: Incredibly friendly and helpful staff! Also very close to Haymarket Station, which makes it an ideal place to spend a night when travelling further by train the next day.

Disliked: Perhaps the lack of private rooms, but the low prices really made up for that.

Liked: It was everything it promised! Nice people, extremely helpful staff, it was peaceful enough and a walking distance from the city center.

Disliked: It didn't really matter, but the beds were extremely squeaky and the showers seemed to decide the temperature of the water by themselves..:)

Liked: Very helpful staff, always both friendly and willing to tell you about things to do, bars to go to etc. Great kitchen, very relaxed about facilities.

Disliked: Weirdly the breakfast is advertised on two different signs in the same room as £1 and £2. It is a bit of a walk to get to the centre but more than manageable and totally offset by all the pluses.

Liked: The free wifi was really great. And the beds were pretty comfortable.

Disliked: The hostel is a really long walk from the city center (but near the Haymarket station on the Airlink100). And the showers were really gross, and the first one I used stopped working halfway through, making me have to switch. Also, they require a cash deposit of 10 pounds when you walk in - since I didn't have enough, I had to leave the hostel and walk down the street to get money out of an ATM.

Disliked: the street was pretty loud but if you want to be just across Haymarket that's ok I think

Disliked: have to take the sheet, duvet cover by ourselves; there is no place to charge mobilephone; the tempreture of the water in the bathroom is not comfortable

Liked: Good location for West end area, zoo, Murrayfield and right accross road from Haymarket train station. Good security system, decent breakfast for £2, decent faciities hairdryers, free internet and wi-fi etc.

Disliked: There were no electric sockets in the rooms, while looking for some I moved a few mattress to look and they were very dusty. They say no sockets for safety!!!!!! but you can give to staff to charge in secure place!!!! but as I needed to charge my phone quickly while I was getting changed I plugged it in to the socket in hallway (along with other people) as I wanted to check messages etc before I went out, so not very convenient. Also the beds weren't very cumfy some were bent in the middle and very squeeky and the mattress and pillow were very thin and lumpy. OK for one night if you need to be at that end of town but normally I will stay in old town or Princes street are much nearer things to do and see.
