Liked: Clean bathrooms, nice beds, really great location

Disliked: People smoke in the kitchen even though they told me the common area is non-smoking. I guess the kitchen doesn't smoke. So it smells like smoke quite a bit. If you don't like smoke, don't go here!!! Even the emoployees smoke.

Liked: Staff was extremely helpful and friendly. Place has really interesting atmosphere, located in an old villa/townhouse from late 1800s.

Liked: This hostel is excellent. If you absolutely have to go to Bucharest then stay here. Other wise don't bother with Bucharest, especially if you are female. It feels very unsafe and very unwelcoming. There are packs of agressive dogs that beleive me, chase. There are Prostitues, there are groups of Gypsys hanging out on most corners and the entire city is very badly lit. Also it is only in the very centre where there are bars that there are people after dark. There are only policemen about in the main squares where there are street lights but where it is dark and dog ridden there are none to be seen. Hideous city.

Liked: Location was Ok, close to some nice bars and restaurants

Disliked: Staff kept turning the Air-Con off during the night which made the temperature unbearable. When I asked them to switch it back on they made up an excuse about not wanting to blow a fuse! I think they were just trying to save on electiricity. Staff also played music quite loudly in the common area throught the night. Not enough toilets for the number of guests. Too many beds squeezed into the dormitories. Building was full of mosquitoes and they had no nets on the windows,

Liked: Calin and Malvina, the owners of Midland, were the first to open a real hostel in Bucharest. Them and all the staff know how to make guests enjoy their stays. My first stay at the Midland was in 2007, and I returned there several times ever since. Great atmosphere, very good location close to the train station, subway, express bus to the airport, a supermarket and a market. Would love to be able to stay longer - it feels like home :).

Liked: This was my second stay because it was pretty decent. Its clean, safe, and the staff are quite friendly & helpful.

Disliked: Its a bit of a walk to the 'old town' and the palace.

Liked: I liked the buliding its in. Plus being opposite the French Embassy is a good landmark if you get lost. Its a bit of a walk from the sites, but at least you get to see some of the 'real' Bucharest. The staff are nice enough and the common/lounge area is huge, so you dont feel like you're crowding anyone else. The bathrooms are very nice and clean.

Disliked: Its a bit of a walk from the main sites (but doable in about 20mins).

Liked: Supermarket is about 1 minute walk. Train station about 20 minutes walk. very convenient if coming from Airport. Take bus to Piata Romana and walk for 2 minutes only.

Liked: Met some really great people, staff were really kind. They moved us over to the Midland Youth Hostel 1 after the first night, which ended up being better than #2.

Liked: Excellent location. Near many of the best bars in the city. Staff treats you as part of the family from the moment you walk in the door. Great place to hook up with other travelers and share stories over drinks. Big Love to Malvina, Gabriel, Madrina and rest of the staff at Midland.

Liked: The toilets smelt like urine the whole time and you could smell it in the living room too, and it seemed as though the place was never vacuumed or dusted.

Liked: This hostel was in a great location with walking distance to see the sights of Bucharest. The staff were exteremly helpful in every way possible. The only note i would make is that the common room, kitchen, and dorms are all on the same level. We stayed here for 2 nights, and although our first night was a pleasant one, our second night was quiet the contrary when the night shift employee decided to play loud music at 5:30 in the morning. I asked for it to be turned down, and he had no hesitations in doing so, but being on the same level as the common room, the noise is penetrating, and could be quiet disturbing for light sleepers. Other than that, it is a great hostel with very helpful staff during the day.
