Each season offers a different experience.... Throughout the summer the verandas welcome guests after a day spent relaxing by the pool, and the garden becomes a dining room for meals “al fresco”. In spring the Quinta witnesses the rebirth of Nature, and the botanical garden takes center stage. With autumn the green canopy gives way to a palette of earth tones as the leaves change color. Come winter and the hotel grows even cozier: Glittering fireplaces warm body and soul, and the Christmas spirit makes magic throughout the hotel.

Quinta das Lágrimas is much more than just a charming hotel. The comfort of its rooms and suites is complemented by a medieval legend of love. It was at the Quinta that in the XIVth-century Prince Pedro and Inês de Castro lived their forbidden love affair. Legend says that it was here that Inês cried for the last time, while being pierced by the daggers of the killers sent by King Afonso, Pedro’s father. Her blood still colors the stone-bed of the fountain that was born of her tears the tears that gave the name to this romantic estate.

The hotel offers three different atmospheres: the Palace, Garden and Spa guestrooms. The palace rooms, which once accommodated the Duke of Wellington and the King Miguel of Portugal, have the charm and romanticism of days gone and offer a stay in history. Offering direct access to our serene botanical garden, the garden rooms overlook the stage for the love affair of Pedro and Inês. The modernly designed spa rooms boast individual Jacuzzis and offer stunning views of the Quinta’s woods and Coimbra.
The palace has several rooms and verandas that offer perfect retreats to read or enjoy a quiet conversation. The Quinta’s library, completely covered with panels of exotic woods, has thousands of ancient books that narrate the history of Portugal and of the family that for centuries has welcomed guests in this Estate of Tears.

Our cuisine uses traditional ingredients of this region to create exquisite recipes that we refresh four times per year, with the rhythm of the seasons. It is a “Market Cuisine” because it uses only the freshest ingredients available. Our Chefs use vegetables and herbs organically grown on our own grounds. In our restaurant “Arcadas da Capela”, that has one Michelin star, you will be able to savor aromatic herbs from our Chef’s Garden and oranges, lemons and avocados from our orchard, as well as the raspberries and wild watercress that grow all over the Quinta. Our other restaurant, “Aqua” offers a casual dining experience and a Latin Food concept.
The gastronomy at Quinta das Lágrimas is the delicious result of the collaboration between our Chef Albano Lourenço and our Consultant Chef Joachim Koerper. During their careers, Albano and Joachim have worked in restaurants that total 16 Michelin stars.
Since Coimbra is the gateway to two of the leading wine regions in Portugal, Dão and Bairrada, over the years we have been building an extraordinary collection of wInês to pair with the delicacies prepared by our Chefs, making the Quinta a true “Wine Destination Hotel”. Our wine list features more than 600 vintages of the best nectars of Portugal, as well as some jewels from around the world. Our masterpiece is the signature wine “Pedro&Inês”, made with a blend of two local grape varieties, one more powerful and masculine (Baga for Pedro), the other more perfumed and feminine (Alfrocheiro for Inês). The union of the two results in an historic wine.
Bamboo Garden Spa
The Bamboo Garden Spa is a sanctuary of peace and serenity that offers a series of treatments aimed at promoting relaxation and well-being for mind and body.
As a “Garden Spa” we incorporate in our treatments natural elements that possess rejuvenation properties, as is the case of the bamboos that flourish in our botanical garden. The bamboo tree is a symbol of Nature’s vitality since it generates more oxygen than the other trees, purifying the atmosphere and the soil. Its natural properties give it the capability of recovering damaged tissues and some people even attribute aphrodisiac properties to it, reason why we use it in our signature massage for couples.
The Bamboo Garden Spa boasts:
- Indoor pool
- Treatment rooms (massages, aromatherapies, etc). The massages can be experience on the garden as well as in the privacy of the guestrooms
- Sauna and Turkish bath
- Fitness Room
- Regular experiences with specialists in rejuvenation and meditation.
Golf
The hotel has an excellent golf academy led by PGA professionals and equipped with:

- Indoor training room and Club-House
The academy, specialized in the training of short-game, is complemented by the region’s two golf courses, the closest of which is located 20 minutes away from the hotel.
The Quinta’s 12 hectares of botanical gardens are a true Natural Museum where rare trees are exhibited as if they were works of art. The Quinta das Lágrimas’ collection of trees boasts specimens from all corners of the world, including camphor trees, maples, palm trees, araucarias, and a couple of sequoias planted by the Duke of Wellington.
Legend says that Inês’ ghost stills roams the Quinta, eternally searching for Pedro. If you are lucky you might even meet her….

Located halfway between Lisbon and Porto, Quinta das Lágrimas is the most complete and pleasant location in Portugal for meetings and other corporate events. The proximity of the estate's different rooms (with capacities ranging from 15 to 350 people) allows for them to be used by small break-out groups at the same time. When it is time to play, the Quinta offers several entertainment alternatives ranging from the spa to the golf academy or to organized team-building activities around the garden and woods.
