Family Holiday

13 August 2011

Liked: Good location close to Ulster Museum and Queens University and easy to get into town. Staff were helpful, easy going and friendly. Room was clean. We stayed with a small child and weren't woken up by any noise. We didn't get chance to go on any excursions, but they were a good idea to see the rest of the country. A good cheap inner-city hostel.

Disliked: The building itself was in disrepair and messy. A sign outside the door to say what the building is would help. There were not enough washing facilities and toilets. The shower room had no privacy screens. The kitchen was often too messy.

Liked: Clean, good living/seating area available. Not too far from bus station although a bit of a walk with bags. Directions to property were clear.

Disliked: Kitchen was locked and we were not informed about the hours it was open so ended up losing food we had stored in the fridge because we checked out early, even though we told them we were checking out early in advance. Too few bathrooms for the number of dorms and frequently no toilet paper in any of them! Most disappointing and stressful that we were promised a free tour which we booked ahead on, then were told ten minutes before departure that it was overbooked and so couldn't go, along with sixteen other people! Then had to pay for another tour and were treated very unsympathetically by the hostel staff.

Liked: We didn't actually stay at Paddy's as they had double booked us. We were placed in a nearby guesthouse which was said to be an upgrade. It was indeed very nice. I saw a bit of Paddy's before our trip and it looked fine with a nice lounge and large breakfast area.

Disliked: Being bumped was a bit of a pain at first but probably a blessing due to the problems which arouse during marching season.

Liked: The staff were very helpful and really made our stay so much that we ended up extending our booking. The hostel is dry, clean and warm, and great value for money. Located a 5 minute walk to excellent bars and 10 mins to the city centre, and the tour to the giants causeway made for a great adventure. Had a blast at Paddys Belfast!! Thankyou to all the staff there.

Disliked: Was not impressed by the boss man yelling at his staff in the middle of the common room. Seemed very unprofessional and made us uncomfortable to be in the area.

Liked: This place is one of the best places I have stayed in a three month adventure through Europe. It is the people who make it so amasing! And they will do your laundry while you are away doing the Giants' Causeway with Troy. That is what I did but that is upto you but I wouldn't miss that tour if I were you. Or any other tour they offer.

Disliked: that I was pickpocketed in town.

Liked: PLACE FOR REAL TRAVELLERS Place for the real travellers that prefer spending money on experiencing the real life instead of spending them on en suite bathroom facilities. If you treat hostel as a place to spend night only and have some time off between different adventures outside then Paddy's Palace is great for you as it was for me. LOCATION Location is very convenient and easy to find. 15 minutes from the bus/train station and old bars. 5 minutes from the university 10 minutes from the botanic gardens and museum (I'd recommend to visit). The hostel cooperates with black taxi tours and staff car order one to come and pick you up from the hostel. There are some nice restaurants and bars to eat in withing 5-10 min distance. ROOMS Beds were comfortable (although quite squeaky), linen was the right length and fresh. There was a washing basin, mirror and a wardrobe (with a lock, although I don't know if it works because I felt safe enough not to use it). The rooms (at least mine) are quite small, but that was no problem for me because I was only sleeping there. I loved the fact that I have received better room (4 beds) that the one I paid for (12 beds) without any problem from the staff. BATHROOMS I have only waited once to get to the bathroom and there was always hot water to use. There as one or two bathrooms at each floor. STAFF The staff was helpful and I did not have problem finding them. You get your own key (5 GBP of deposit) and there is no curfew, so you are very independent. COMMON ROOMS, GARDEN, DINING ROOM AND KITCHEN Common rooms are nice and comfy, there is also quite a lot of books to read and exchange. No cardboard games :( There is a TV, but sadly no DVD/Video Player. Did not use the garden, but it seems to be night place for having barbecue (or at least the grill equipment looks promising).I was curious about the bunker but apparently it is not possible to enter it. Breakfast is simple but I have seen the same kind of stuff in more expensive hostels. Surely, you cannot expect much for this price, but I was not bad nevertheless. I was eating out most of the time but the kitchen seems to be equipped well enough for any food preparation. FACILITIES You can borrow towels and do your laundry for some small fee (5 pounds or so). There is computer (really slow) with access to the internet, printing facilities and wi-fi (did not use it though but it seemed to be quite easy to access). FREE TOUR Free tour was amazing and was actually one of the main reasons why I have chosen this hostel. I booked in advance and then made sure two days before that I am booked and there was no problem with any of that. Few things are optional and paid separately (lunch - around 10 GBP, rope bridge - 4.50 GBP, waling guided tour in Derry - 4 GBP), but due to Paddy Wagon you get discouts from the original price.

Disliked: - Although the place was generally clean it could really use some renovation. The tiles in the bathrooms are fine, but the walls quite unpleasant to look at. But hey, as long as the bed is fine and you spend most of the time outside, you would not be really bothered (just as I wasn't). - Dudes, upgrade the computer room!!! - it's really difficult to use it and the Firefox and IE browsers are so old it hurts. - The DVD Player, cardboards, microwave and sandwich maker would be a nice addition to the place. - Change the departure times of the Free Tour on your webpage, hostelworld, hostelbookers etc. and on the leaflets. It still says 8 or 8.30 am, but in fact it leave no earlier than 9.30-10 am. - I thought that they accept credit cards, but in fact cash is the kind - bear it in mind before visiting to avoid unpleasant surprise. And be ready to pay extra 5 GBP for key (returnable when checking-out).
