“Pick of the backpacker hostels” – Lonely Planet

With the best location in town overlooking the beautiful, historic Kuirau geothermal park, two mineral hot pools and a large heated outdoor pool, Hot Rock Backpackers is the place to stay in Rotorua!
With a bed for every budget, you can choose to stay in a private ensuite, or dorm backpacker style accommodation, just two minutes walk from Rotorua’s cafes, shops and the downtown information and bus terminal.

Talk to our friendly kiwi staff to get the local tips!
We will do our best to ensure that you experience the best of Rotorua’s amazing geothermal forces, Maori culture, history and the many adventure activities available.
We can also set you up with Beyond Travel deals on all kinds of local and national adventure and transport deals.

When you want to relax, treat yourself to one of Hot Rock’s geothermal heated mineral pools, or make a splash in the hostels heated outdoor pool.
You can meet up with old friends, or make some new ones during a fun evening in our very own, funky Lava Bar – it's one of Rotorua’s busiest night spots. Lava bar is open for fun 7 days a week!

Hot Rock Backpackers has a range of rooms and most have their own bathrooms and balconies. Many even have their own kitchens.
We could go on about the hostel BBQ area, internet access, laundry, sunny dining area and much more – but it’s far better if you discover Hot Rock for yourself.

Rotorua is famous worldwide for two main things - Maori Culture and Geothermal Activity.

Maori Culture: The Maori people of Rotorua have always had a very strong culture and have preserved this powerful 'Maoritanga' into the twenty first century.
Rotorua offers some of the best Maori Culture Experiences in New Zealand. These range from expertly performed shows and concerts, hangi (earth oven meals), marae stays and storytelling.
Maori culture is that of a very proud people with a noble past and a promising future. It's important to experience the formal cultural elements of Maoritanga during your visit to New Zealand, but make sure you meet the people too.

Geothermal Activity: The geysers, hot pools and mineral pools of Rotorua have been used by people in all sorts of ways since people first arrived around 1000 years ago.
Maori used the hotter pools to cook their food (look - no fire!) and for bathing. Pakeha (New Zealanders of European descent) used the pools for recreation, and we all still love a long relaxing soak in those lovely hot pools!
There are a range of places around town where you can see geothermal activity - Kuirau Park opposite the hostel is the best free spot. Polynesian Pools have a range of pools at different temperatures in a lovely outdoor setting on the lake's edge, and they are affordable too!

Reception staff can advise you on which tours and thermal reserves are the best. Just ask - we're locals!
