About Fat Cod Backpackers

Recently refurnished lodge offers a clean warm comfortable and friendly atmosphere.
There is affordable double and twin rooms as well as small and large dorms.

This hostel is the nearest you will find that is just like your home. Come to relax, unwind and re-energize. We are closest to the ferry, buses, Railway Station and the information center. The town center, wharf foreshore, mini golf and other attractions are nearby.

Facilities include full laundry, bathroom and kitchen facilities, free tea and coffee, bicycle hire, video library and more. Enjoy our free soup and free Breakfast over the Winter months

For smokers there is a smoker’s balcony.

Accommodation Information

FAT COD BACKPACKERS offers a range of accommodation options for the budget and backpacker travelers. Children welcome. If you are passing through,Fat Cod Backpackers is a great place to stay and catch your breath while you enjoy the views of the Marlborough sounds from the comfortable seats on our balcony.

Medium Dormitory rooms
Clean and comfortable Mixed and Female Dorms (7-10) bed rooms with ample room for guests and their packs and comfortable beds.
Small Dormitory rooms
Clean warm and Comfortable (4-5) bed rooms.
Double and Twin rooms
All rooms are warm, clean, and fully made up with sheets, Duvets, and Towels. There is plenty of room for packs and luggage.

Fat Cod Backpackers hostel policy
Valid from the 1st of October 2016 (subject to change )
- Bookings may be charged during busy times via the credit card given when booking. All bookings that are checking in after 5pm WILL be charged - If the card declines we will let you know via phone, if we cannot call you your booking will be cancelled and the beds reallocated.
- All no shows will be charged for the full booking with NO refunds
- Cancellations We require 48 hours notice of a cancellation. If you do not cancel outside the 48 hour period you will be charged for the full booking
- Refunds All bookings will be refunded if made outside of the 48 hour cancellation period. An administration fee of $2 will be deducted for every booking refunded.
- Key Deposits are $20 per set of keys, or a credit card number. No deposit NO KEY. No keys returned NO key deposit back or a $20 charge on your credit card.
-Check out is strictly 10am anyone still using the facilities after 10am WILL be charged $10.....yes even if you sleep in!
-Facilities The kitchen and bathroom are closed each day from 10am until11am for cleaning. When the closed sign is up please do not enter, this is part of our health and safety policy.
- We have security cameras operating throughout the hostel 24/7
- Alcohol is not to be consumed on the premises between closing (10.30pm) and 12pm the following day. All intoxicated guests will be removed from the hostel with NO refund.
- Drugs are illegal and are not permitted on our premises. Anyone with drugs will be removed with NO refund and the police WILL be called.
-Loud noise and behavior is not permitted after close and before 9am. Please respect the rights of other guests to have a good night's sleep.
-Smoking is not permitted inside our building, please use the smoking areas only.
-Damage coursed to our property will be paid for by the person responsible for it. You agree to pay for damage to linen, furniture, building, etc.
-Visitors to the hostel must register at reception and get a pass. They are allowed in the common areas only, NOT in rooms, and are not to use the hostel facilities. All visitors must be gone by 8pm.
-Hours Our office is open in Winter at 8.30am until between 9.30 and 10.30pm From December our office is open from 8.30am until 11.30pm. These hours may change as required. Anyone Checking in may do so after 11am

Location Information

Activities
The waters of the Marlborough sounds are perfect for diving, kayaking, fishing, sailing, and boating. Picton is the starting point of a variety of cruises around the magnificent Marlborough sounds. There are a number of excellent walking tracks including the famous queen Charlotte track, the snout track, the Tirohanga track, the Essons valley, and the Nydia track.

How about spending an afternoon on the local mail boat delivering the post to the isolated bays of the queen Charlotte sound and the Tory channel.

Sea fishing
The many sheltered beaches and secluded bays in the sounds provide excellent fishing opportunities. Borrow one of our rods and try your hand.

Fishing trips:-
Kayaking
One of the best ways to see the beauty of the sounds is in a kayak. Day and half day trips are offered. A number of excursions are offered from Picton including three day kayaking, mountain biking and walking tours.

Mountain biking
The queen charlotte track is one of the only tracks that can be mountain biked. Bikes can be hired by the hour or day. Ship cove to Furneaux part of the track is closed to bikers Dec-Feb.

Underwater diving
Situated at the top of the south island the Marlborough sounds are formed by a network of ancient sunken valleys which form a vast waterway consisting of over 3000k of dive-able coastline guaranteeing great diving or snorkeling all year. Dive in the local marine reserve or wreck dive the Mikhail Lermontov

Wine tours
Half day and full day tours right into the heart of New Zealand’s premier vineyard district. Sample the best that the wineries have to offer. Small relaxed groups.

Eco and dolphin swimming tours
Ecotours in search of the most acrobatic of dolphins - the dusky dolphin. Swimming with the dolphins is an experience that you will never forget.

Boating safaris
A unique experience, drive a boat, explore the sounds enjoy the thrill of driving your own boat.

Swimming
You can swim at many of the beaches and coves surrounding the sounds.

Local museums
While away an hour at the small local museum. The Edwin fox museum is also worth an hour or two. The Edwin fox is NINTH oldest ship in the world and has had a varied career

Cancellation Policy

Customers can cancel their reservation free of charge up to 1 day before arrival. After this date, charges will be applied by the property up to the first nights cost of the reservation, unless otherwise stated in the property’s conditions. Deposits paid are non refundable.
