About Fat Cod Backpackers
There is affordable double and twin rooms as well as small and large dorms.
This hostel is the nearest you will find that is just like your home. Come to relax, unwind and re-energize. We are closest to the ferry, buses, Railway Station and the information center. The town center, wharf foreshore, mini golf and other attractions are nearby.
Facilities include full laundry, bathroom and kitchen facilities, free tea and coffee, bicycle hire, video library and more. Enjoy our free soup and free Breakfast over the Winter months
For smokers there is a smoker’s balcony.

Medium Dormitory rooms
Clean and comfortable Mixed and Female Dorms (7-10) bed rooms with ample room for guests and their packs and comfortable beds.

Double and Twin rooms
All rooms are warm, clean, and fully made up with sheets, Duvets, and Towels. There is plenty of room for packs and luggage.

The waters of the Marlborough sounds are perfect for diving, kayaking, fishing, sailing, and boating. Picton is the starting point of a variety of cruises around the magnificent Marlborough sounds. There are a number of excellent walking tracks including the famous queen Charlotte track, the snout track, the Tirohanga track, the Essons valley, and the Nydia track.
How about spending an afternoon on the local mail boat delivering the post to the isolated bays of the queen Charlotte sound and the Tory channel.
The many sheltered beaches and secluded bays in the sounds provide excellent fishing opportunities. Borrow one of our rods and try your hand.
One of the best ways to see the beauty of the sounds is in a kayak. Day and half day trips are offered. A number of excursions are offered from Picton including three day kayaking, mountain biking and walking tours.
The queen charlotte track is one of the only tracks that can be mountain biked. Bikes can be hired by the hour or day. Ship cove to Furneaux part of the track is closed to bikers Dec-Feb.
Situated at the top of the south island the Marlborough sounds are formed by a network of ancient sunken valleys which form a vast waterway consisting of over 3000k of dive-able coastline guaranteeing great diving or snorkeling all year. Dive in the local marine reserve or wreck dive the Mikhail Lermontov
Half day and full day tours right into the heart of New Zealand’s premier vineyard district. Sample the best that the wineries have to offer. Small relaxed groups.
Eco and dolphin swimming tours

You can swim at many of the beaches and coves surrounding the sounds.
While away an hour at the small local museum. The Edwin fox museum is also worth an hour or two. The Edwin fox is NINTH oldest ship in the world and has had a varied career
