Liked: Very nice staff and lots of help with tours and travel info

Disliked: Common room smelt from cooking fumes. Someone was making something pretty smelly the time I was there.

Liked: The staff were very helpful. It was good to have lockers in the room. Having an en suite bathroom was good but it would be nice if the shower was separated within the bathroom as the water was over a lot of the bathroom. There was a nice common area and the kitchen was very clean. This was the best hostel I stayed in throughout my travels in NZ.

Disliked: The internet was expensive but this is common in NZ. There is a club next door that is really loud so bring ear plugs if you are a light sleeper.

Liked: It was a great place to stay. Everyone was very nice and it was clean. They had free bikes to use, too which was great.

Disliked: Not a dislike, but something that could be improved is the character... more social events would be fun.

Liked: i really enjoyed staying at the saltwater lodge. I loved the open plan communal area and the outside seating is just perfect. The staff members I spoke to were all really friendly and helpful and were more than happy to give advice and recommendations on local activities. Having ensuites in all the rooms is a real bonus and found everything to be spacious and spotlessly clean. Although the hostel is right next door to the local nightlife, I never felt it was really noisy and has a much more chilled out and relaxed feel than other hostels in Paihia. I would definitely stay again.

Disliked: The one bad thing I felt was that there was a very large group of Danish students staying during my stay. I found that because there were around 20 of them and they wanted to cook together that I had to get in fast to use the kitchen and other facilities. Although this was inconvenient I dont think this was a bad reflection of saltwater lodge.

Liked: friendliness of staff, clean and organised room. Did not have time to use kitchen or bicycles. Shop, bar and cafes, beach adjacent to hostel.

Disliked: Sliding doors and cupboards, and deck flooring on verandah magnified the sound of other hostel users.

Liked: Very Clean, Staff was very friendly, FREE Bikes, really 50m to the beach

Disliked: No free internet!, actually the price for the hostel was NZD 2 per night expensier than promoted on hostelbookers but I didn't have to pay that since I was told a different price by hostelbookers and that wasn't my fault. So very friendly staff!!!

Liked: massive rooms with outside dining area on the decking. good communal facilities.

Disliked: popular with young noisy backpackers makes it hard to get a good nights sleep.

Disliked: the nightclub next door - was a tad noisy but with some earplugs it was fine!

Liked: I really liked the dorm rooms, they were clean and spaceous. The facilities are good, free tea and coffee is always a bonus (although you need your own milk!) The man on reception was really helpful and friendly.

Disliked: The Internet is charged by how much you download not how long you are online for, my computer downloaded some updates and my credit went in 5 minutes. I also thought the staff working upstairs stuck in a group and made you feel like your intruding by being there.

Liked: The guy on the front desk was very friendly and helpful and carried my bag upstairs for me. The en-suite bathrooms were the cleanest I have ever seen in any hostel. The outdoor decking areas were nice and the communal areas were well kept and comfortable.The kettle and fridge in the dorms was a nice touch.

Disliked: I had booked a female dorm, but was sharing with a couple and and another guy. They seemed Ok though, so I didn't bother moving.

Liked: Whilst the bedrooms were clean & roomy, the kitchen area was regularly full of flies and worktops unclean. The fridges were full(mainly of beer). The decking on the first floor was strewn with footwear and clothes from the young people who were staying there.

Liked: The pics on the website really dont do this hostel justice - the rooms are huge, clean and modern with good kitchen and lounge facilites. The only thing that let it down was the laundry as some of the machines were broken but hopefully they will get these fixed. I wish we had stayed longer as i loved it here - great location!!
