A two storey solid concrete building built in the art deco style of the 1930's.
Converted to Backpackers in 2007.

The Mural on the building:-
The Maori Mural depicts the ancient Maori gods, with the Sun god rising in the east, over the ocean waves & whales, blown by the Wind god over the land to meet the Forest gods, that encounter the Fire gods breathing Volcanic ash from the Mountain to the shores on the west coast where the early English Whaling Ships wrecked on the shores of the N.Z.

Opunake has all the infrastructure & facilities of a larger town or city.
It is fairly level in contour and sits about 100 m above cliffs & sea level.

The location provides access to the Wild West coast and numerous reef breaks, and Opunake beach is regarded as the safest beach on the coast.
Life-guards are on duty in summer, December - March.

Great fishing, snorkeling for paua, kite-surfing, paragliding, dam-dropping, river walking, tramping, canoeing. Mountain-biking, skateboarding, & running.

All extreme sport equipment is available to purchase or hire at Surf Lodge 45.

Pick-up available from Hawera, Stratford, Eltham, New Plymouth.
